Are A/C's marked with Energy Star the only option for energy-saving units?

Air conditioners that are Energy Star compliant prevent greenhouse gas emissions and meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Window air conditioners, portable air conditioners, and swamp coolers (also known as evaporative coolers) are also more energy efficient compared to central air conditioning because they cool only a room/area, rather than the entire home. They can use up to 75% less electricity than central air conditioners. www.cindyehret.posterous.com/

In addition to cindy's comments, remember that air circulation helps a room feel cooler, and helps distribute the cool air more effectively. This can allow you to set the air conditioner to a higher temperature.

Remember, too, that having the appropriate size A/C for your room is crucial. A unit that is too small will run all the time without sufficient cooling, while a unit that is too large will cool the room before it has removed enough moisture from the air, resulting in a damp, clammy room.

Try to have the A/C in a window that does not get full sun, if at all possible, and make sure it has plenty of room outside for the heat to escape. This will help the unit run more efficiently.
