Lockedunit freezes up

I have a unit that is about one year old.  Recently, twice I found it iced up and not cooling.  The first time I found that the filter was dirty.  After cleaning the filter, it work well for a few day.  Then, it iced up again.  Is the unit defective?  Would it still be under warranty?

Normally icing is caused by two things, overcharging, or a clogged filter as you discovered.

The third thing that can do it is If the filter was clogged that severely, you may well be due to have the coil cleaned as well.  If the air passing over the coil is restricted, this can cause icing as well.

If you have the thermostat set too cold the compressor will not cycle on and of, when the compressor shuts down periodically that will allow the evap to defrost, if it runs constantly the evap will freeze solid air won't circulate and it stops cooling. The room should be sealed with doors and windows closed to allow the heat to be removed, If the room is too large for the size conditioner it will also freeze up.
