We bought a Fedders unit which went bad the first year but the Company no longer honors warranties. We then bought a Frigidaire FDL 70S1 which was replaced under warranty; the second one we now have is four months old and no longer drains and is icing up. We have a 1700 sq. ft. unfinished basement and the units all kept the area dry but break down about a year's age. Any help with units that last?

What capacity were the old units?

Sounds like you might need a higher capacity unit that wont be strained as much as the two old units were.

All 3 were 70 pint units.  The one we have now (and the one before) were both Frigidaire FLD70S1.  A call to a Sales Representative and questioning by me revealed that they have a bulletin out on icing but that is all he would tell me.  Says they will replace it but still waiting.  Hate to replace with the same model.  They have a FDF70S1 but people complain about it too.

Other than the units having died, does the single 70 pint capacity unit seem to "do the trick" with your basement?

Yes, they all kept the basement dry.  We live in GA which is humid.  They worked quite a bit especially on humid days but did well.

I'd recommend getting the Kenmore 99701 dehumidifier with the longest protection agreement it has (I believe it should be 5 years).

It has a built-in pump, so you can run the water out a window or up into a sink rather than needing a floor drain or having to constantly empty it out.

With the protection agreement, you'll get annual check-ups (during which they'll change the bushings and give it a complete work-up) and all parts and labor for defects, normal wear and tear, and even power surge damage will be covered 100%.

Considering the constant use it will get, you'll be able to squeeze far more out of the machine and the protection than just about anybody!

What is the protection agreement and I assume it has a cost?  Do the annual check-ups have an added cost?

Do I remember that a few years back some of the Kenmore units caught on fire?

Who services it, is it Sears or an outside Company?

Thanks for the answers.

Protection agreements are like service plans you pay for upfront instead of over time and yes. Annual check ups are free

Yes

Sears

Thanks, Oldfart!

If you have more questions about protection agreements, you can check out my blog, randywanat.blogspot.com, or you can go to http://www.sears.com/shc/s/nb_10153_12605_NB_ProtectionAgreements?adCell=AF .

The annual preventive maintenance checks are included with the protection agreement, and are worth about $30 each for a dehumidifier (if you drop it off; it's worth about $60 for a check-up at home). For the constant use your unit will receive, it's a wise investment.

Yeah, when it dies from over use you got sears to catch your butt.
