Apple - 16GB iPod Nano Digital Media Player - Black —

For the longest time, I swore off Apple products. Steve Jobs had plenty of money and none of mine would help line his wallet, thank you very much. My first mp3 player was a Sansa 8gb, styled very similarly to the current Nano design, with a more tangible flywheel and a thicker feel. It had all the features I needed, was very similar in style to what was "in", and was about 1/2 the cost. At the time, I loved it...

...til it started deleting my music at will.

Flash forward a year or so later, to Christmas 2008, and my wife presents me a brand new iPod Nano. 16gb, in black. It matched my car! Hesitation got the better of me, but after a week or so, I downloaded the appropriate software, and gave it a whirl.

The first thing I noticed was how intuitive iTunes, the software, was. I came of age when digital music was just rearing its ugly head, and Napster was free. One feature I loved about Napster was how I could open the window, all my music was right there, and I could set it, and forget it (to steal infomercial thunder). Aside from not having illegally acquired music at my fingertips, iTunes works in nearly the same way.

One of my biggest detractions regarding the iPod line was the display - a diminutive icon displaying album art, alongside the liner notes of who, what, when, etc. The Nano has blasted this out of the water. When the screen is on, the album art serves as ones background, above an opaque display of artist, song title, etc.

A new feature for this particular gen. was the "shake to shuffle" feature, where one physically shakes the unit to shuffle the songs. It's particularly handy while driving, or when frustrated by the lack of a good song selection.

On first glance, the item is thin. Like, terrifyingly easy to break thin. But, it is cased in a metal alloy of sorts, and a simple sports case with render this a non-issue.

I've been converted. I couldn't ask for a better unit with which to essentially carry my entire music collection. So long as you are particular to put on music you will actually listen to, 16gb will serve as more than enough room to get the fullest of this wonderful little device.

You win, Steve Jobs! Have a dollar, give or take a hundred and forty nine.
