LockedCollege Boys-Which W/D is good choice?

posted on June 21, 2009 at 09:32AM Inappropriate?

I need to buy a new washer & dryer for 3 boys in college.  I'm sure they will abuse the machines by overlading etc.. so it needs to be durable and simple

Any ideas/comments on which models to choose from?

The 500 or 600 series sets are nice and simple. if you want big and durable the HE2's are great for stuffing hope this helps

For college kids you want a top loader without frills.  LIke you said, make it as simple as possible.  The HE2 is nice, but they are just going to break it so why bother.  I'd say the Kenmore 600 is your best bet -- stay away from the 800, it has a design flaw that makes it impossible to add detergent the proper way.

Good point. Go 600.

I second the Kenmore 500. Maytag has a similar model, but it runs around $75 more most of the time, mostly just for the brand name. I might also consider Amana, if you don't mind the slightly smaller capacity, as they have a slightly better warranty. (the gearcase has a 5 year warranty and the outer tub has a 10 year warranty, although the labor warranty is only for 1 year. but it beats having to pay for parts too.)

He means that you have to put the detergent in first, then laundry, then close and run cycle. However, if you let the detergent drain through the holes at the bottom of the tub before adding laundry, it should be fine.

For the college boys, I'd say the 400 washer 29422 and 500 dryer 69522. Just make sure they don't do like those imbiciles on Youtube who load each other into the dyer while drunk. If they tend to do that, get the 400 69422...the hole is too small to get a person inside.
