LockedMy oven won't turn off!

posted on April 04, 2009 at 10:16PM Inappropriate?

Let me start by saying that I have a Kenmore Smooth Top Electric Range. The model # is 790.95664102. We bought it about 5 or 6 years ago, so it is definitely not an old range.

The other night I put a pizza in the stove for supper. The beeper had gone off to let me know that it had preheated. Within 8 or so minutes after putting in the pizza, I could smell something burning. I went and opened the oven to find my pizza was black on the bottom and my oven was filled with smoke. I quickly shut the oven off and took the pizza out. It was then that I realized that my oven was extremely hot inside (well over the 425 that I set it at) and would not turn off! The element was glowing orange and stayed that way until my husband turned off the breaker. It would have just kept heating up had we not turned off the breaker. I realized that this was a fire waiting to happen.

I researched this on the internet and found 80 complaints on one website alone, of people having the same problem. Evey person said that they contacted Sears and Sears would do nothing. They will not admit to any problem with these stoves. One person's stove actually got so hot that it melted the things around her stove that were on the counter. That was most definitely a fire in the making.

I also found that 11 of the 80 complaints had model numbers that started with 790 (same as mine), which means that the stove was manufactured by Frigidaire. Many people didn't list the model number, so that count could be much higher.

My reason for starting this discussion, is that I want to know if anyone else had has this problem. Sears is definitely not willing to admit to any problem nor take care of it. No recall has been issued at any time. I don't think that I should be expected to spend the money to replace my stove, when there is definitely a defect of some sort. I think that Sears should be working to correct this problem before a fire does happen and someone gets hurt or, worse yet, killed.

If anyone else has had this problem, you need to report it to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. As ConcernedConsumer said, this is a huge fire hazard and the CPSC needs to know. This is not an isolated incident for this one person and the general public needs to be informed. Sear will only take notice if enough people report this.

On August 6, 2009  this happened to our oven... It was in use, I shut it off, instead of shutting off it got hotter and hotter.  I had to move the stove and pull the cord out of the socket to get it to stop...  what are other people doing with this problem.. I have to have a stove, but I don't feel write about repairing something that I can not trust.. Please advise....

Here's my 2 cents...

sorry... ....kenmore electric range model 790.95413203. (Frigidare) I also nearly had a fire in my house tonight because the oven lost it's mind and seemed to go to maximum temp even though it was set at 170 degrees. I shut off the oven but it didn't turn off...before I could trip the breaker the display began to flash "F1" and began to beep. According to the manual this oven is equipped with " a state of the art electronic oven control" which features a full time circuit diagnostic system which constantly monitors crucial oven curcuits and will immediately stop operation if a failure occurs. I'm glad my car lacks this hi tech system because I'd hate to see an idiot light begin to flash on my dashboard which causes accelaration to 137 mph. I wonder if Underwriters Laboratories Inc. approved this fire hazard ??  I also posted on the UL web site...keep your fire extinguisher charged

maybe its a fail safe device that melts the oven so the error cant happen again

Hi KrispyChicken-Welcome to MySears.  Have you called a service tech in?  Just wondering if you are able to use your oven, at this time?  Sometimes, I think, the oven may end up resetting itself, after a little while.

My wife and I were in the process of buying a new stove until I read about this happening. Now I have a bigggggggg doubt about it. We still like the stove with the convection oven, self cleaning,5 burners(one is a warmer), 2 shelfs, and electronic display board. Think it is model #97434. Now Loews has basically the same one only it is a Fridgidare model #22196 (cheaper) but my problem is I hate Loews because of problems we've had with them. I would like to stick with Sears but they won't recognize Loews prices so will wait till friends and family days on the 4th of Oct and see what kind of deal I can get from them then.

My mother had this same problem, the tech told her to replace the board which cost her 100$ just for the problem to come back 2 weeks later, she ended up getting a new range.

JulieK...let me begin by begging your forgiveness for the following utterly sarcastic comments...why would I call a service tech when I can get free expert advice that my oven "may end up resetting itself ,after a little while"    Julie, a more appropriate response would have been, WHOA that was close to being a disaster. You should count your lucky stars that the failure of  "the a state of the art electronic oven control" ,didn't result in a fire. "if I were you, I'd kick that fire hazard to the curb "

To Krispychicken,

First, allow me to apologize for the delay in responding to your post here. I wanted to reach out and express our apologies and concern regarding the problems with your range. As with anything on the market, no matter what it is and no matter how state of the art it is, it still has the possibility of failure. Of course we do hate to see things like this occur and we'd like to look into the situation for you. My name is Brian and I am part of the Sears Cares escalations team and we would like to help if this has not already been resolved for you. At your convenience, please contact my office at searscares@searshc.com so that we can resolve this issue or even to talk more about what happened. When you have a moment, please send us an email. Please provide a contact phone number and the phone number the range was purchased under (if different than the contact phone number) and we will call you directly. In addition, please provide the screen name (Krispychicken) for reference to this issue and we do look forward to talking to you soon.

Thank you,

Brian J.

There is a replacement CLOCK, TIMER ELECTRONIC (316207502R) for $140.99.

I would see if there is some sort of recall notice or factory authorized service before ordering any parts, though, for the 790.95664102.

The control switches are all the origninal (no evidence of substitutions) part numbers.

That's what computers get you!

I remember when... you just had to worry about the stuff not turning ON.

Of course, there was my Craftsman Industrial right-angle grinder, that wouldn't turn off, without being unplugged.

Took me about 45 minutes to clean out that rocker switch mechanism.

I understand most of the power tool sanding/grinding switches are "sealed" now.

That would have been an "uneconomical to repair" item, if I wasn't handy.

Brian..thank you for responing, I will provide the requested information.

Adam, I found the part on-line the same night my oven failed. Did you note, as I did, the part is refurbished/reconditioned? Looking more and more like kicking this thing to the curb is the thing to do....I don't kick much to the curb with two kids in college and another that will be going next year. I, like you, enjoy fixing things around the house but I won't be able to sleep when I'm away from home with my wife and youngest still there. Root cause analysis need to be done on this component...in my simple mind it is either design flaw or a manufacturing issue. This will only occur when the distributors(Sears) put pressure on the manufactures (Frigidare) to demand the supplier of the part (their name escapes me..I'm on the road-->part was mfg'd in Mexico) provides a quality part. UL certifiies the safety of this appliance so they bear some responsibility as well (I've been corresponding with them also). 15 years ago I wouldn't have invested this much effort but after reading all of the posts, on many sites, about people who had near misses I couldn't let this go....never would have believed an oven could get that hot.

Guys, please let me know which models of the ranges you are talking about. I recently bought a Kenmore Elite double oven smooth top range made by Electrolux/Frigidaire. I guess I'll have to keep an eye open for this problem now?
