How often do you change your water filter?  Where do you usually buy them from?

Is this a survey-type question, or are you asking for how often one should change the filter and where they're available?

I do it every 3 to 6 months on my GE side by side.  I get them from LOWES.

More of a survey-type question -- trying to figure out whether people actually change their filters according to manufacturer recommendations!

I live in town, and have what some call "city water", which is treated and filtered before being distributed to consumers. I don't have to change my filter as often as someone might who is on a well with no form of water treatment. I'm going a a year now, and have noticed no decrease in flow or quality. However, some folk on wells with no sediment filtration must change them every 3 months. So the answer is, "It depends."

As for where to buy, I have heard that Lowes sells a Whirlpool brand version of our 9030 for less than Sears does. My guess is it is their version of our old 9020, not as good as the 9030, but that is unconfirmed. Home Depot sells a wide variety of GE-branded filters. If you have a Sears Parts store nearby, you can pick up a two-pack at a discount over two separate individual items, or you can even order them direct from http://www.sears.com/shc/s/s_10153_12605_Appliances_Refrigerators_Parts+%26+Accessories#filter=Type|Replacement+filters.

True.  You can even order them from Sears PartsDirect, online at Sears.com (where there should be a link on the home page) or call 1-800-366-7278.  You will need your model number.

What happens to the water filter, if you "don't" change them after 6 months? Someone told me that mold and mildew builds up inside them. Is this true?

bacteria can also grow in the filter. you should change it a the very least once a year. If you are not going to change it you should use the bypass that some manufacturer's provide and just run it direct, like drinking direct from the kitchen faucet.

Great point terryf, the inside of almost all water filters in refrigerators are carbon, when this material gets too old it can grow mold/mildew/bacteria/etc. Manufacturers all concur that 6 months is average but it's all depending on usage. I get mine online usually and try to get it cheap as possible, however my next venture is to plumb an R.O. to the fridge, then Ill bypass the filter as it will become unnecessary, and some fridges ave the bypass built in, just depends on manufacturer and model.
