Welcome to the forum.

If you go to Sears Outlet (www searsoutlet com),you'll find low-priced washers and dryers.  Currently there is a pair for $499, as low as I've seen lately.  You may not get many features or fashion but your clothes will probably be clean ;)

You'll have to see if the units are available in your store or maybe you can buy online and get it shipped to the store you like.  Not sure how that works at Sears.

I'm a value shopper who recently bought a low-end washer/dryer pair for under $600.  They're basic but had lots of cycles, temps, water levels. So far  I'm pleased.  When I get around to reviewing I'll focus on those features and if those were worth the price paid, not dwell on features I wish I'd gotten (but was too frugal to pay for).

Good luck and remember to come back and post your review.

Kays, you might also want to look at the kenmore 400 series.  The washer's model number is 29422.

Right now, the Kenmore 400 series set is the lowest priced conventional laundry pair that's worth its price (there are cheaper machines available out there, but they're junk, to be polite). One thing you may also want to consider is an entry level front-load machine, like the Kenmore 48102, combined with a cheap dryer. You'd save a LOT on water and energy costs, it's gentler, and cleans better. You could get such a set for around $850 or so.

In either case, I'd recommend using HE detergent, which is a necessity in HE machines, but also cleans better than conventional detergents because it rinses away more completely (less suds means less residue left behind). For frugality, nothing beats the UltraPlus powder detergent on sale through tomorrow (halloween) for half off, making the 03209878000 120 load box $9.99 and the 03209879000 180 load box $11.99. Best bargain in detergent!
