Lockedwater heaters

We purchased a new 50 gallon water heater on Monday July 27 and it was delivered and set up on the 28th in the AM. But after installation, the technician discovered that the pilot light not work. We were told to contact the sales person and then the repair service who had an robot answering service stating that we would have someone out between 8 and 5. Today at 5:57 PM we are still waiting and have not had the courtesy of a reply from anyone. We have talked to the salesperson, the department manager, the customer relations department and have had no satisfaction. And no hot water for two days. We have made mamy applicance purchases in the past but will never use SEARS again. I wonder if we will ever get a repair. Roubique Arvada. CO.

Hi lilelk-Welcome to MySears!  That is a long time to be without hot water. I am so sorry to hear about this. What have the associates and managers told you?  Have they helped at all to set up a repair?

I have also purchased an unreliable water heater from Sears. It is a 40 gal Kenmore economy natural gas water heater. The unit lasted the first year and has failed this year. The repairman has been to my house 6 times without success. The filter was cleaned 3 times and the gas control unit changed and the thermocouple changed twice. The repairman tested the air flow and had me check the flue for blockage. The manual start has failed and the pilot light can't be started. When the pilot light is started, it will only stay on for 5 or 10 minutes at a time. Is this how reliable the products are from Sears? My email is: clifftorn@hotmail.com.

I purchased a gas water heater from Sears, a few years back.

It has performed flawlessly.

I purchased a medium to high end unit, with a towards the high end of water tank capacity for my home.

It must have... a pilot light or maybe a self-igniting flame.

However, having worked flawlessly, I don't really know (or care).

:)

A satisfied Customer.

Returned Water heater - "nothing wrong".

It didn't work on their power.

What?

You didn't know your fuel/power source?

And, went out and bought a major appliance?

That is so strange...

A new free one?

Larger size?

No price differential payment?

Sound familiar?

A hint

This one almost "got me".

Apparently, they make water heaters in not only different tank sizes, but different HEIGHTS.

I never noticed the "lowered ceiling" in my laundry room.

The installers got the FULL sized unit to fit.

However, a 3/4 size unit would have been easier to install.

And, now YOU KNOW...

In response to Clifftorn's post from July 30 2009 10:06AM

Sears doesn't make water heaters; A. O. Smith does. They're one of the largest water heater manufacturers in the country. And, with the millions of them that are sold, even if we multiplied all the complaints about them by 10, it would still pale in comparison to the enormous majority that work just fine through a normal lifespan. Does your water heater vent into a chimney?

So, most of the water heaters Sears sells are really good, and this site magnifies the effect of the ones that are having problems?

I'm not sure if the water heaters here, were professionally installed or DIY jobs.

All I know is my Sears water heater (professionally installed) has worked flawlessly, since purchased - a few years back.

The installation I had done on my new Kenmore water heater was done very professionally, also.

Among some of the more interesting code violations, fixed by the installation team (at an extra cost) was the old gas water heater had a SINGLE-walled exhaust pipe running through the ceiling, out of the roof.

The code required a mulit-walled vent pipe.

My home could have been burned down by the old water heater's installation!

Great job Sears approved installation team!
