Inappropriate?

Ok, the pediatrician told us that our daughter could start on solids now, if we want. He gave us a list of foods to try and a schedule to follow.
I have heard that once you start feeding your kids baby food, they start to smell funny. My sister-in-law said that her kids smelled like rotten eggs once she started feeding them rice cereal.
Is that true? Are there any types of baby food you would steer me away from?

If you child is 100% breastfed, then introducing solids or formula will make their dirty diapers smell MUCH worse. I suppose it would also alter their body smell, but not normally in a bad way, unless your feeding them onions and garlic. :-)
I would skip rice cereal - unless their are diet/allergy issues in your family. It really doesn't have much nutritional value. If you want baby cereals, I would try the oatmeal instead. You can also mash your own bananas, avocado and cooked sweet potatoes. Starter foods recommended by LLL.

Your baby won't smell different, I promise. I totally recommend making your own baby food if you can. It is super gratifying and just and you know exactly what she is eating. Koloe wrote some awesome suggestions. Pureed lentils are great in just abt. anything and a good source of protein, too. You can mix them in with all types of vegetables! If you don't have time to make your own, there are so many baby food options out there. It is all about variety in her diet!

I have noticed with my babies (breastfed) they dont smell. As soon as I start feeding them formula, I can smell it on them. The rice cereal did seem to make the poo diapers smell much louder. I would say that is the only thing that solid foods would make smell worse is the diaper and not the baby. I do know if they eat too much sweet potatoes they will turn orange! It stains clothes too.

Zach doesn't smell, unless he does ........ in his diaper. He made the switch to solids so easy, and was off of formula so easy. Thank you because the formula was so expensive and we did not qualify for any extra help.

The only thing that feeding solid foods will do is work your baby's digestive track more. This will change the consistancy, and yes the smell of their feces, but it should not effect their over all body odor at all.

My baby boy, Jack, did not smell funny when I switched him to baby food either. That's weird... We also tried rice cereal and it was horrible. It make him so constipated. Our ped changed us to oatmeal and it's so much better!! I make my own baby food as well. So easy and cheaper than the jarred stuff! If you have a blender, you can make your own! You can google homemade baby food and lots of sights come up. My 8 month old LOVES cauliflower!! He can't get enough. Most kids don't get introduced to cauliflower ever. He also eats broccoli. My ped loves that I'm giving him veggies that WE would eat!! Not just corn and green beans.
It's definitely rewarding!! Good Luck!

30% of waste is excreted through the skin. Though you make not smell it, your baby will smell differently.

While I agree with oldfartsears, unless you are feeding your child garlic and onions, you won't smell it. And neither will anyone else... sheesh....

nver heard of this...and the alvacado thing is false... babys will react to foods diffrently...just b.c your baby reacted that way does not mean that will be the case.. Colic can be caused from anything... Foods...formula...Breastmilk... My son doesnt do well with Green veggies but does great with sweet. pot. and squash, carrots...
Good luck with the baby!

Feeding babies foods too early can lead to food allergies. That is what the above poster is reporting. Feeding strawberries/chocolate etc at very young ages leads to food allergies as adult and make make it so they can enver eat them. So don't feed them adult foods, especially not commonly allergic foods till a later age.

i have two girls. one is 3 and the other is 6 months. I breast feed my older one until she was 13 months. when i introduced her to baby food it did change the smell of her diapers. it was worse, but it never changed the smell of my baby. NOw with my youngest that i just had she was only breast fed for month and half due to my supply running out. I did notice b/c she was on formual it changed her diaper smell drastically from breast milk to formula, so when she started eating baby food it was not as strastic from formula to baby food. And again it did not change the smell of my baby.

Too the making ur on baby food blog, it is soooo great. I didn't make my own with my first child, but with this one have been and it is great. the food taste much better than the bought kind. it is much cheaper and it is much better for them. even better that the organic bought kind b/c really u can't get all the perservatives out. To the smell thing when u make ur own it does not smell as bad as the bought kind through their diapers. Believe it or not it really doesn't take very long to make your own food.
