I miss the days when the tooldepartment had a dedicted person who was a professional and knew almost everyhing there was to know about tools and was willing to take the time to teach you about them.  Now that everyone is on commision all they want to do is sell sell sell and get on to the next customer.

Funny, I've found it to be just the opposite. Being on commission means there's a motivation to make sure the customer is given the proper attention and is offered everything that they should be to make their purchase complete. It's also a motivation to learn about the products, because the more you know, the better you can sell. Without commission, you make the same paycheck whether you do a bang-up job or if you stink the joint up. I think what you mean is you miss when people had been with the company for 20 years and their pay had progressively increased until they perhaps knew everything in the department. Fortunately, the commission system provides an incentive to learn a lot quickly, and those who do so are valuable. Those who don't want to learn and improve will fall by the wayside.

In some ways I would have to agree with Mr. BlueCrewGuy, the object is to become the best in knowledge so more costomers come to you and thereby increase your sales and $.  On the other hand they are driven by "SALES" and for the most part I find that more of them can not answer simple questions concerning tools and will not go out of their way to find someone who can answer the question as they would take their sale away.

Although knowledge is definitely a big part of being able to sell a product, a whole bunch of "sales metrics" have to be obtained too.

Ironically, your having knowledge can be easily offset by an inability to sell other less tangible items.

Computers keep track of all this stuff, with reports being generated daily/weekly/monthly and year to date on each Sales Associate.

And, a filled out Customer Satisfaction Survey is a really great way to reward a Tool Person's time and expertise spent with you, no matter how large or small your purchase is, on the register receipt they hand you.
