For trimming grass this weed eater does a great job. Just don't expect it to do farm work and you'll be alright. The real problem is the battery life. I usually have to switch batteries after about 10 minutes. Also I've had this trimmer for 2 years and this year the batteries had to be replaced because they would no longer hold a charge. You could almost buy a new trimmer for what 2 batteries cost.
...

If you buy an extra battery or find a way to convert this to a powered via electrical cord system it works amazingly, very close cuts and no false starts. I don't care for gas trimmers as they stink up my yard and such, so having a cordless one is nice. I wish it had the option to plug in a cord just in case the battery dies as it takes a lifetime to charge another one.
...

It is true the batteries don't last long and they don't hold a charge very long after they are charged. I keep one on the charger at all times.

I recently discovered that Black and Decker has a stronger battery:

FireStorm® 18V Extended Run Time Battery - Silver Series MODEL # FS18SBX.

They are expensive (around $69) but if they are worth it!! They hold a charge, they give about 50% more power, and they don't drain in 10 minutes like the regular batteries that came with this trimmer.
...

I bought the earlier model of this unit. Black & Decker does not list the part numbers in the instruction manual, so if you break a part, ordering the replacement is a hassle. I broke the handle on my grass hog and when I tried to replace it I learned the handle has been discontinued and there is no replacement part. $100 for a trimmer? No part numbers in the manual? No replacements for discontinued parts? No thanks. I'm going to steer clear of Black & Decker products until they clean up their act.
...

I spent time online researching trimmers and ordered this one. Waited for the email confirmation, printed it out, drove to Sears, picked it up, brought it home, and put it together.

The 2 piece guard is defective. The 2 pieces don't align so that the screws can be put into place.

Almost 20 minutes on the phone with a surly Black and Decker customer service rep and I'm told that the guard pieces are on back order with no date for availability. They will ship them to be when they become available.

This item is no longer in stock at my local Sears.

It's annoying that such a simple quality assurance issue could cause such a hassle. We can try ordering a new one and returning this one, or waiting possibly months and months for a replacement part, all because they shipped a defective item.

Not happy!
...

I was a little hesitant getting a cordless to say the least. I've had gas powered in the past an was happy while it was running well, but to say the least I wasn't happy all that often. I just got sick of going though gas too slowly that it would go bad and have to figure out a way of disposing oil mixed gas at the end of the year. I just got sick of the whole gas process itself. So electric was my option. But with 2.5 acres, I didn't see how having a cord was condusive.

So decided a good cordless would have to do it for me, so I researched a bit. For the price, this one came up a lot of good ones. I tried it out the first day. No problem with power for trimming around the house and other spots I can't get with my tractor. I got done with my entire usual routine, and put it away after cleaning it off a little. I then realized I didn't even have to use the second battery! One more thing, the "no bumping string advance" is the best thing ever. I can't tell you how much I hated...
...

This is a great value. I had a similar Black & Decker trimmer that I replaced with this purchase. But this time they have upgraded the batteries. I can finish the weed wacking & edging with the set of 2 fully charged batteries.

It is powerful enough to handle edging and all weeds. Obviously, the tougher the job the shorter the battery life.

But it is leaps and bounds ahead of messing around with gas & oil mixing and adjusting the rpm's on a gas trimmer.

And the replacing on the line is quite simple, just pop off the top, put the new one in and peel off the tape. The lines are a bargain, you can buy a six pack. That should last you at least a season.

And you can use these batteries on other B&D products.

There are really only 2 minor issues:

1) It takes a day to fully charge both batteries and the 2 batteries last a little less than an hour.

2) My previous model used to have a meter on the battery charger to tell you when the batteries were fully charge - the newer model no longer...
...

This line trimmer is great for maintenance trimming of my lawn.

Battery powered trimmers are not strong enough to knock down thick grass or overgrowth.

I work with battery powered tooling, and 15 minutes of constant use on a NICAD battery is average, no matter what the brand. Also battery recharge life does deteriorate over time, it is a fact of life when using battery powered equipment.

I threw out the trickle charger, and paid the money ($30) for the rapid charger from Black and Decker, recharge time is 2-2 1/2 hours per battery depending on their age and charge depletion. Pay the money, and save yourself time by buying the rapid charger for your batteries.

I disabled the automatic line feed. When ever you let go of the trigger, the spool advances about an inch of line out, whether its needed or not. What a waste in my opinion. I don't mind manually advancing the line myself, which I only need to do once, maybe twice when I use this trimmer.

This trimmer is used with my electric trimmer...
...

The first year, I loved this. It was light, easy to use and as adjustable as I needed it to be. 2nd year, battery does not hold a charge long and the replacement spools are cheaply made and break easily. I'm not sure why Craftsman quality has declined so much over the years, but I cannot afford to purchase any more Craftsman products. I've had 3 Craftsman trimmers in 5 years and they all have the same problems. Plus, each one has a different style, yet same sized battery. Why can't Craftsman standardize their batteries and make them last longer, like lithium? I'm finished buying Craftsman!...

The Black & Decker 18 amp cordless trimmer is not a bad trimmer for the price. My wife did not like the gas powered trimmer that we had (she said it was too loud and she didn't like smelling like an outboard motor when she was done), so she had me buy this one so she could help around the lawn. It was easy to put together and, after the initial battery charge, was easy to get going.

It goes through most grasses, even longer ones, but gets bogged down with much more than that. The battery lasts 20-30 minutes, and even shorter with thicker grasses. It is definitely a plus that it comes with two batteries. It would not be a good product with only one battery. It works great around our fence, but probably won't work well for those with heavier trimming needs.

All in all, not a bad trimmer if you don't have a significant amount of heavy trimming to do. Recommended for those with small lawns or those that don't want to deal with a gas trimmer or a cord....

I've owned this edger/trimmer for almost two years -never had a problem!

I'll get the ONLY CON out of the way -The Battery: the battery allows me to edge and trim my entire front yard -but I have a small yard. If you have thick grass that hasn't been trimmed on an average sized yard -you'll need two batteries. Now the PROs -- Since I have other models in this line (22" hedge clippers, etc.) I have three batteries and two chargers. The chargers are small and don't get in the way -same for the nicely sized batteries. I replaced my old B&D 12V edger (which lasted ten years) with this and I LOVE it!

One of the best things about this is that you can adjust the length of the shaft with a just a slight turn of the extension coupler. I have another home and this adjustment allows me to fit the unit easily in the trunk of my car.

It's quiet (other than the sound of the line whipping around) and I can edge at any time without disturbing my neighbors.

I hate trying to start garden equipment by pulling a string! This takes the hassle out of trimming. This has 2 batteries and comes with a charger. The battery doesn't last a long time...about 20 minutes?...but you can quickly exchange to the second battery & continue. I usually am tired by that time anyhow. This trimmer is not very heavy and is perfect for women or someone who has a bad back. The batteries are also used on other Black & Decker tools, so you can exchange them as you want. Very convenient.
