Great generator!

I purchased this unit in the summer of 2009, didn't need it until 02-20-2011. Started on the second pull. Ran it for 4 days straight. Purchase at least 3 separate Yellow Jacket 100' 12 gauge extension cords (lifetime guaranteed) to not cause the unit to trip a breaker. I had three things on one...

starting problems

I bought this generator on December 14th of 2008 because we were out of power for 2 days. By the time I got it home, we got our power back and never got to use it. I use to start it once a month. Then we lost power in late Feb of 2010 and I ran it for 16 hours. Used 2 tanks of gas and filled it with...

We purchased this item due to a storm emergency.  We were very excited to find the assembly very easy, first time start up was immediate.  Ran all night with ease.

Would recommend this item to anyone.

I purchased this generator on the last day of the ice storm of 08 in New England. I finally had the opportunity to really "use" it last winter (Feb '10', it was still in the unopened box). I mated it to a transfer switch (THIS IS IMPERATIVE..Don’t back-feed or try some other cute but dangerous shortcut. Consult an electrician). This gave me 1 220V line (well pump) and 8 110v ckts (5 zone Oil furnace w/integrated hot water, kitchen ckt-fridge, coffee maker, --900W microwave and a toaster oven, just not at the same time--, 3 bedrooms, lights on 3 levels, multiple TVs). Granted we were not at...

In 2009 Kentucky was hit very hard with an Ice Storm.  Countless numbers of families without power, water, we were in extreme trouble.  Power poles and lines snapped like toothpicks.  We were without power for a month, I never want to experience this type (or any other for that matter) of devastation's ever again, it was paralyzing.  We purchased one of the very few generators left in stores(as they went like loaves of bread).  We were lucky to have been able to get the brand we trusted and believed in.  That Storm Responder Generator saved our lives, literally.  We could not even flush...

Great generator and started right up!  I drove from Houston to Ardmore Oklahoma to get this generator after Hurricane Ike (12 hours round trip) with my two toddlers. Brutal but well worth the effort.  With a few extension cords...was able to provide electricity to four of our neighbors who's homes were badly damaged by the hurricane.  We were able to run fridgerators, lamps, fans and appliances.  Neighborhood nicknamed me the red cross.  A reliable generator  helped our neighborhood survive a freightening and stressful 9 days!  If you have a family depending on you, just get the generator...

Late February, 2010 wet snow storm dumped over two feet on us and power went down along with many trees. I was able to get one of these units, put the wheels and legs on it and get it into position by myself. It's heavy, but still just barely manageble for one semi strong man to move around, up and down stairs using care and straps. It started on the first pull and when I remembered to move the control lever from 'start' to 'run' it worked flawlessly. It provided enough power to run the two refrigerators, the freezer, the oil burner, the airhandlers and all the lights, televisions and outlets in...

purchased this generator in august of 2008, a few days before hurricane gustav hit louisiana.  power was out for 6 days.  after the storm it was brutally hot and muggy.  this machine powered a window unit, refrigerator, several fans, and a few lights.  It is not large enough to run the whole house, but provided enough power for us to be comfortable.  changed the oil after five hours and then every 2 days.  ran like a top.

since the storm, i have used this generator at my camp and on a few jobsites.  it cranks on the first or second pull.  great value.

Easy to start

Purchased during ice storm of 09 in KY.  Well worth the money.  I've started it at least once a month since storm.  It starts on first or second pull, with not much effort.  A bonus feature is small light that shines on outlets.  The only minor issue for me about this generator is the "gas gauge" which is not very accurate.  Otherwise, very well made.

B&S Storm Responder 5500

After we lost power for 5 days due to Hurricane Ike in Ohio and not being able to find one I knew that this was something I wanted to have. I researched all the generators and decided that I wanted one with about 5500 watts. The model I picked was apparently being discontinued so I settled for this one which was basically the same model but a few dollars more. I kept checking and comparing and was waiting until I could find a good deal on one because we actually wanted 2, one for me and one for my daughter. I finally bought them at the end of April and was glad I did as the price jumped the next... read full review »

Good to Go

We lost power in Arkansas during the last ice storm for several days when I was lucky enough to get my hands on this generator. Man me and my family sure were happy to get some heat going in the house. With an outside temp of 17 degrees our space heaters ran off of the generator worked great and kept the house in the 60's. I would def. recommend this to anyone in a pinch.

Updated Review

Well,I remembered having the same problem with my Craftsman Tractor one time....the gas cap has a little hole in it and it was plugged up causing the fuel flow to stop.I blew through the gas cap vent and, presto, instant energy. The unit runs fine and there is NOTHING wrong with the unit.I apologize for jumping the gun on the previous review. Great buy for the price.A tad loud but it runs great.

Well, based on the stellar reviews of this generator I decided to go with it.I picked up the generator today.I followed all the setup directions to the letter.I checked the oil level and filled it with fresh gasoline. It started on the first pull but then stalled after 20-30 seconds and has been doing the same thing for the past 2 hours or so.I tried all the troubleshooting tips but I get the same result.Bad first impression.Sears technician will be coming out on Weds.I'll update my review after his visit.

Storm Responder

This is the best to get through the tough times. I have had no power for three days I adapted the the plug and ran my oil boiler, well, microwave, TV, DVD, lights to five rooms with energy efficient bulbs on the main floor and three additional lights also with energy efficient bulbs. The listing in the manual will explain how many watts per appliance or lights you can run. Oh and I am on my computer typing this now. GREAT PRODUCT!!! Follow the directions and you will be OK too!!

Excellent Product

Power generation review: The generator worked very well right out of the box. Took 15 minutes to set up and deliver power. While I don't expect this to run my whole house (otherwise, I would have purchased a stand-by generator), it has more than enough capacity to provide power in emergency situations. Recently, I used it to power my fridge and two oil filled electric radiators for 2 days. Mechanical review: Ran for 13 hours on a full tank of fuel as advertised. Easiest starting gas engine I've ever used! Starts on the first pull every time! Very well engineered, everything is easily accessed... read full review »
