first you should go and look at what you want to replace it with

What you will need, is a Hayne's manual, which has wiring diagrams in the back of the book. All the wires are color coded, and they make small grey wire nuts that I feel are better than butt connectors for splicing.

The other option is to get a plug adapter for your vehicle, which will give you pigtails to splice to, that will be color coded via the wiring diagram supplied with the harness.

As your vehicle is a bit older, you may have a hard time finding the harness, and at that point, the Haynes manual is the way to go.

Your new deck will most likely have a detachable harness, so you can disconnect it to make wiring it easier.

Also, you will most likely need a mounting kit with the new stereo, to mount it in the dash.

Always use wire strippers, not cutting pliers, and if you have any more questions, please feel free to post.

All good advice above ^^

In addition, go to Crutchfield as a place to start.

Whenever doing this sort of work, it's a really really good idea to disconnect the battery. Just pull the negative terminal.

Crutchfield is an EXCELLENT place to start with. They have charts that allow you to see which models and types of decks are compatible with your vehicle. There are a tons of people on that website that are professional installers and you can ask them tons of questions :)

I just Bought a truck and the garmni is wired to a switch . The last owner left the mount and the part that was on the back of his unit but iI don't know how to tell which unit he had.

I don't think there would be a way to tell. Some mounts can be specifically for the Garmin model or it could be a generic, universal mount. =\

Your car is not a special case :) Lucky for you that vehicle is what they call a single din size stereo system. Several companies including Scoshe manufacture a wiring harness that will plug into the vehicle factory wiring and allow you to directly connect your new stereo to that automobile. My suggestion is find a decent stereo you like which is single din size (ask the sales people at the store) and then have it installed using that adapter harness. A couple of good replacements for that car are JVC and Panasonic. Few people know this but Panasonic and Fujitsu are the contract manufacturers for Alpine and Clarion and many Japanese cars factory systems including the Infinity and Bose systems. You will find their own stuff quite good and you don't have to spend a ton and listen to a bunch of jive about high end stereo units. Also buy one that plays MP3 files. Money well spent. Don't let anyone fool you around on this install. There is no magic in that car or its wiring. This is a simple and straight forward replacement. Best of luck to you. AE
