Carmel Wayfarer Inn - Carmel, CA —

We have stayed in the Wayfarer Inn quite often when we visit home to Carmel, and we keep returning for the comfort of the beds, and the quality of the breakfast.

I am a Carmel native, and I admit that after being away for some years, I had a hard time finding this inn at first!  Following Highway 1 south to the Carmel exit, you will proceed down Ocean Ave to Mission Street. Turn right, and they are three blocks to the corner of 4th St and Mission Ave. I made the mistake of approaching from the other end of town, and wandered a bit before finding the front of the inn.

Parking is in the rear lot for hotel guests, and it fills quickly. The office is located in the front of the building through a charming courtyard, up a flight of stairs from a "check-in parking only" space.

Check-in is 3PM and check-out is 11 AM.

The inn requires a two night stay on weekends, and there is a 72 hour cancellation window, or the first night will be charged. A $10 processing fee is also assessed for cancellation.

Room rates vary, with the best pricing being between October and June. Prices range from a queen bed with a full bath for $89 to a king bed two room suite for $179.  June through Sept the pricing increases approximately $40-50 per room, so check the website for specials offered and notices of local events that would change pricing.

There are sixteen rooms to choose from, and as with the other inns- none are marked room #13! (some of us find that to be a lucky number!)  Most recently, we stayed upstairs, in room 11, which featured a queen bed, nice sized full bath, and fireplace. Other rooms have kitchens; complete with gas burning stoves and full refrigerators for extended stays. We enjoyed our large closet, and this room has a large mirrored vanity area as well.

The noise level from the street is very low at this inn- the streets of Carmel practically roll up after 9pm, so the only thing you might hear is the street sweeper or the garbage trucks on certain days of the week. Unfortunately on one of our stays, we did indeed have terribly rude neighbors, and you will realize that your windows facing the courtyard make it that much more loud if someone is talking in the courtyard or on the balcony. The walls are thick enough between the rooms, but the windows are single-paned and transmit noise easily. Usually only Sat nights are a problem.

The rooms are plain and simple, with good mattresses, and well equipped with clothes hangars and plentiful towels, and a small basket of toiletries. A hair dryer is also available. An iron and ironing board are available from the front office. There is no coffeemaker in the room, but it is available in the office from opening to closing at 9pm.

Breakfast includes choices of hot or cold cereals, hard boiled eggs, toast, muffins, raisin bread, yogurts, and a fresh fruit platter is always offered. Serve-yourself waffles can be cooked. Coffee and tea and hot chocolate packets are available round the clock, and an afternoon wine/cheese/crackers and cookies is served. Popcorn packets are also offered with a selection of movies to watch in the room VCR's.

The inn is conveniently located in Carmel within easy walking distance to all of the shopping, but the beach is a bit of a trek down the hill. It's not the going down-it's the coming back up!

While Carmel usually gets the fog rolling in at night, the courtyard fireplace area is a nice place to read in the afternoon.

New for 2008 is a large room with a view of the ocean.
