Yes, at least in the Midwest, I think we can come to terms with the fact that winter is around the corner. 

I have a big down coat that comes down to my knees to keep me warm for the walks to school and back. It isn't that pretty, but it keeps me warm!

What is your choice of coat for winter?  Down or wool?  Long or short?  Do you have a coat you wear to work, and one for shoveling or outdoor activities?

I have my commuter coats. those just depend on what the weather is like. For cold days, I have my long down coat. For mor milder days, will wear either one of my wool coats or a fleece. Honestly, it all depend on how cold and nasty it is outside for me to determine: long, short, down or wool.

I agree-it does depend on the weather.  I have a couple of fleece jackets for the cooler fall days. The down is for the really cold, under 30 degrees type of day!
