LockedGetting "Big Name" Apparel and Shoes

posted on June 17, 2008 at 07:42AM Inappropriate?
One thing that I would like to see come to kmart (as an emloyee and a customer) is "big name" apparel and shoes, such as Adidas, Nike, etc.   Sears sells their products, and I don't see why they would not be able to sell them at kmart.

That sounds like a great idea! I wonder how doing so would affect Sales margins?

Unfortunately, that won't happen. Brands like Nike insist that their products not be sold in discount stores. That's why you don't see them in K-Mart, Target, or Wal-Mart. In fact, when Sears Holdings unveiled the hybrid concepts in 2005, Nike pulled their products out of Sears stores in fear that they were moving too close to the discounter side of things. Basically, they fear being in a discount store will harm their brand's image. So, it won't happen, because brands like Nike won't allow it.

Thats true...thats why in payless you see Tail wind which is a discount nike brand.
you see etc....Kmart needs to utilize the brands they have and make them better.

Agreed ... Nike isn't coming back ... not as long as the Kmart name is still within Sears Holdings.  I agree with Retailman, Sears Holdings (especially Kmart) just needs to make the brands they have now better.

Or they could take an in-house brand name of shoe (Diehard/Roebucks/etc) and try to make it comparable to the great shoe brands of Nike/Adidas

Glad to learn this. I like Sears for it's high quality made in USA products with reasonable prices and reliable service (occasionally I have a dumb question). I'm pleased to shop at a great place that is NOT a discount store.

Ditch the shoes - that game was lost by Zappos and now Amazon years ago. If people want shoes, there are shoe stores everywhere. I walked through the shoe section of both Kmart and Sears and it was dismal at best. Move on, or just sell Lands' End shoes and call it a day.

Ahh that's interesting didn't know Nike would refuse to sell their stuff just for branding. Heh always thought companies wanted to sell stuff first and foremost.
