LockedMerchandise: Lands End Vs Sears

posted on June 05, 2008 at 11:01AM Inappropriate?

I love Lands End's products but I feel like Sear's regular women's merchandise has declined in quality and become bizarre. In understand it must keep up with what is fashionable but must it become so much a slave of it that it has lost the unique character that made it Sears: it's dependability? Has anyone else noticed that? Where have all the essentials we depended on Sears for gone?

What specifically has disappeared. Is there an example of the types/brands of clothing you would like to see? What would make you feel that Sears apparel is back on track?

The "unique character" was commonly described by most people not as "dependability," but "matronly." It was the place to go for grandma to get her clothes, but generally not fashionable for anyone under 65. The buyers for women's clothing have made great strides in choosing clothing styles that are more likely to be popular with a wider audience. With some clothes, there may be quality issues, and specific feedback (brand, type of clothing) helps the buyers negotiate with vendors in the future for better clothing without sacrificing fashionability.

Sears should push Lands' End as its clothing brand.

Yes!  You need a line of apparel that appeals to the younger ladies.  My wife (thirtysomething) can't hardly find anything she likes.  You could survey women in their 20's and 30's to get a better idea of what they want.  THEN you'll have a stronger apparel department!

I used to enjoy shopping Sears clothing for the entire family but now I shop elsewhere. Their clothing line has really changed. I was looking for some basic shorts the other day and Sears had none. Their clothing on the internet look so outdated and drab. It makes you want to shop other places. I don't know who does the marketing for Sears now but they need to get their act together. They should also lower their prices some.

I would like to see old school clothing that appeal to all ages and economic situations.  The clothing on the internet are horrible and the store's clothing is very limited in style.  Mr. Roebuck must be turning over in his grave.  Many people used to shop exclusively at Sears for the fashions that they like, young and old, but now most shop because they can charge it on their card.

Are you familiar with Lands' End? That is old school clothing that appeals to all ages and economic situations. The prices are quite reasonable, the clothing is handsome, durable, and covered by a Satisfaction Guaranteed, Period. warranty, and it's really comfortable.

Lands' End carries button-up shirts, polos, tees, jeans, khakis, slacks, sportcoats, blouses, shorts, tank tops, bathing suits, shoes, sneakers, socks, underwear...you name it, Lands' End carries it. You can check it out at www.landsend.com.

I've always thought that Sears would benefit from the Lands' End brand by expanding the instore concept and reducing the clothing from other brands. The section in my local sears for Lands' End is almost on par with J. Crew which is fantastic... but I really cringe when I have to walk over a bit into the clothing aisles and it feels like a separate store.

Kmart may be more able to handle the clothing for a bargain (ala Target and Walmart) with their new kmartdesign.com stuff. I like that they are trying to test the edge there... but the biggest step should be Lands' End being the exclusive clothing offering at Sears locations and having  Kmart do the rest - just my opinion. How do other people feel about it?

and when I meant that the clothing section at Sears felt like 'a separate store' from the Lands' End section - I was referring to it as a bad thing. That I could be in a really great area like Lands' End for a moment and later, to a pretty burnt out offering for wears in another. That I believe dilutes the Lands' End brand, as people who are looking through the store may have second thoughts on Lands' End - which is why I prefer to see a solid offering. You really cannot beat the Lands' End prices and quality - even J. Crew cannot. This is a gem of a concep that just requires some tweaking to work well.

Hey, Blue Crew Guy:  I'm 67 and the only items I purchase from Sears is "Lands End" ... the shirts, etc. are good for any age, and they are stylish too.  As for Sears being a store only for 65'ers, I think the rest of the store (except Land's End) are for teenagers.  If I want style, but I have to pay higher prices, I'll go to Lord & Taylor.  I think Sears should make the Land's End section much larger and take some space out of the perfumes area.

The children's line of clothing at Sears has to be the Best!

We have heard from a few customers over age 50 that a lot of our clothes are made for younger women. We seem to be in a transition right now and Lands End has done a terrific job filling a void. I try to steer customers to Lands End if they can not find something they like. But many customers think Lands End is too expensive for their budget. We have to get the word out to our customers that Lands End IS affordable.  Telmil is correct  our childrens line is the best.

Lands' End is like a slightly more refined J. Crew, a little bit less posh than Brooks Brothers, and priced like the Gap - its the best way to think about it I'd say. A real gem but very much hidden in the rough.

Land's End is truly amazing.  And if people think Land's End is expensive, they can rest gauranteed that it is Gauranteed. Period.  Why buy shirts/pants/suits/etc over and over again through wear and tear when you can just buy what you need from Land's End and know it's covered forever?

I am 41 years old - 5'7" and weigh 140lbs. I recently was in Sears and the Lands End clothing appealed to me. It was nice quality for a reasonable price. I tried on two pairs of the khaki casual pants; they fit horribly!  They were tight at the waist and baggy & long at the bottom. I would have sworn they were cut for a male. I ended up purchasing Lee khaki jeans size 8 for 19.99 and they fit great.

I also tried on a pin striped L.E. blouse (size small & size Med) neither really fit well at all. I ended up purchasing a similar $70.00 shirt (mens size small) at A & Fitch for $39.00!  It is great quality and fits A lot better.  Lands End must cater to a certain body type - I'm not sure I know what kind!

Were you trying on the new One Fit (or is it Fit One?) clothes, or were they the standard cut clothes? The standard cut tends to be a tiny bit generous in its cut, but without being baggy or poofy. The new women's clothes have a more form-fitting shape, and I wonder, since the fit wasn't quite to your liking, if this might not have been the cause.

I always loved Lands End clothing (via their website) but now when I go to Sears I first go to the Lands End section and look for items for myself and grand kids.  You can't beat the value and style.  I would like to see an expansion of Lands End children's line at Sears.  Even my daughter shops for her two kids at the Lands End section of Sears (wouldn't even think of it before she had kids).  I don't like the Sears brand of clothing for kids, but I have found a lot of "basics" for myself where I couldn't find anywhere else.  Thanks Sears

BlueCrew could be right--Fit one, for pants, has a waist at the hips compared to Fit 2 where it is between the belly button and the hips. That makes fit 3 at the belly button. This is the same idea with the shirts. 1 is the most form fitting and 3 is the least. The three different Fits are fairly new, I would say less than a year. If you ever have a question with clothing at Sears don't be afraid to ask. That is what we are here for.

I think Lands End is a bit pricey for me. Plus i'm not sure if they have plus sizes, but i've never seen them either. If they made a plus size section in Lands End I may buy, because I love good looking clothes that fit!
