LockedBest Game system

I would like to buy my kids a new game system for Christmas but I'm not sure which one.  I like the Wii but friends of mine really into games say go with the Xbox or PSP.  This would be for a 9 year old so any thoughts on the best one?

Hi WinMore-Welcome to MySears!  Here is an older thread discussing this topic.  I know it helped me to make a decision!

The PS2 is the best system to get for young kids, all the games are now inexpensive and so is the system. The PSP is really fun to.

PS2 is great if you want your kids to hate you. I know it doesnt seem to be ab ig deal to you, but get them a PS3 with a couple controllers so they can play with their friends, theyll be super popular and they wont hate you for getting them a PS2

His kid is 9 years old, if he thinks his child can take care of a $300 unit then by all means get a PS3 but if not (young kids usually break things) then the PS2 is perfect because it wouldnt be a huge loss.

I like the Xbox 360 personally.  This is kind of a personal bias, and I'll mention that outright, but since I bought the 360 when it first came out I do tend to lean towards it when talking about it.  However, with the 360 and the PS3 being at very reasonable price points finally, getting a PS3 which has the built in blu-ray player for your movies at night, its just so hard to get a 360 which most people are going to use just as a gaming system.

It totally depends.  As a family we have both.  The Wii Sports game that is included is alot of fun as a family.  We will routinely all bowl or do some of the other games.  Its active and fun.  Car racing games are fun too.   That being said, sports games such as Madden and the like don't cut it on the Wii.  Our son will prefers his PS3 for that.  We have hockey and Madden by EA sports for Wii that sit and collect dust as they are tough to play on the Wii.  He really prefers these games on the PS3 and I would agree ad well.   The Blu Ray player helps too.  So you really need to look who you are buying it for and what type of gaming system is right for your family.  If its a family get together tool, the Wii is great.  It is also much more active.   That being said, the PS3 is better graphically and more of a gaming tool.  Just remembr, figure another $100-150 in accessories in controllers and charging stations etc when getting started!

Less accessorices needed for the PS3 (controllers charge while plugged into the system)

Ok, here is a rundown. The Playstation 3 is a good system choice for more mature gear gamers. This is based on their game selection. It has a bluray player so you can watch your favorite movies with your family. Free internet access which means they get to play online multiplayer and surf the internet. A future forward entertainment console. The Xbox 360 is also a good system for a more rounded audience. This is also based on their game selection. I believe that the Xbox has more games. Identical to the Playstation 3 except for graphics, pay to play online service,no bluray. Hope that cleared the air for those two systems.

It really depends on what they're interested in. We have all these people that are just giving their personal insight on what they think is best before asking questions to find out what the 9 year old is interested in. Questions are the path to knowledge. If the child is "media" inclined then Sony products would be the way to go (although the products do play games as well). If they're more inclined to gaming, the 360 or the Nintendo DS or DSi would be the way to go. There are tons of games for children in that age range that I'm sure they would enjoy. I have almost every game system and I feel the same for all of them because they were made with different purposes, even though the main purpose for them are games.

Just thought you'd like some input. :)

for most young gamers starting out the PS2 still remains the best system. Followed by a Wii

i think that the ps2 would be best anyways for your 9 year old, its good that the next gen systems are out now while he is this age, but you should really get him into the older consoles first then step it up, i love vid games not only cuz im a game designer but i grew up playin the atari then nintendo the super nintendo then sega, sega cd, gameboy, psx, n64, ps2, xbox, gamecube, xbox360, ps3, and it made me appreciate as time went on how our gaming industry grew and how cool it was to see it grow

I'd go with the Wii.  I have 8 year old nieces and its one of those game systems where you can play for hours.  Its not going to be the best graphics or plot oriented games, but can be a good source of family fun.

The boon of a PS2, is that there is a program called HDAdvance, which will image all your games to a hard drive, max 120 GB, and you never have to swap the CD-ROMs again.  This is especially great with young children, who can have quite the knack for destroying a disc.

All you need to do to install the hard drive in the PS2, is remove the ethernet adapter via the two retaining screws.  On the adapter, you will see a Molex power plug, and an EIDE-PATA connector.  Attach the hard drive, and carefully slip it into the PS2, then tighten the screws.

HDAdvance goes for $29.95, and will not only format the drive for you, it will install the games on the hard drive, and it has a built in menu for game selection.

The real kick in the pants is that the PS2 will read data WAY faster from the HDD (hard drive), than it ever could from a disc.  This speeds up game loading remarkably, and overall really helps to improve gameplay.

Happy gaming!!!!!

The Wii works for casual gaming families, but if her son actually wants to get into gaming the Wii definately isnt the console for that.

yes i would start off at 5th gen gaming consoles, get him a n64 or ps1, or even an xbox, he should not start off with the best because he will not admire nor even see the way our generation of gaming has grown, do you really wanna buy a corvette for your sons first car? good analogy mastervader why thank you mastervader BFBC2 FTW!!!

should not have connected it to the internet, then you wouldve been able to just put in a game and play. It is not a video game console its a computer entertainment system.

BFBC2 FTW!! x2
