The top and front edge of my Kenmore electric stove gets dangerous hot when I have a burner on. It has scorched my counter tops. What can be wrong? Or is this just a cheap feature? thanks

IF its new, call a technician out and tell them that the burner controls arrent working.

he'll come out and probably try and feed you some bull about it being normal but make sure he notes it, then get another guy out there for a second opinion and replace itif necessary

Can you provide a model number? Is this a coil stove or a smoothtop? How old is this model?

At any rate, if it's getting hot enough to scorch your countertops, it is NOT working according to the manufacturer's specifications, and something is definitely wrong. For safety reasons, I recommend you stop using the stove immediately and call 800 4 MY HOME (469 4663) to schedule a visit from a technician.

It is a year old, not  in warranty anymore. Maybe this is something my husband can replace. Is it called burner control and where is it located? We don't have the money for a service call. Sometimes, it is almost as cheap to buy another stove, huh. Awaiting your reply. Thank  you very much

Blue Crew,  it is over a year old and is a coil type. I also thought it is dangerous.  I use to think Kenmore was the best, but the last one I had, the burners kept going out and got expensive replacing, now this one is going bad. Can you suggest another brand?  Thank you for the hotline # also.

I would suggest finding out if fixing it would be cheaper, or if there has been any kind of recall on your product. Calling 800 4 MY HOME would help you with both of these things.

As for reliable brands, GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, and Kenmore have been very reliable according to the 2010 Consumer Reports Buying Guide. As with all things, just because you have a bad experience with one product, that's not necessarily an accurate portrayal of the entire product line or brand. Sometimes a junky product lasts forever. Sometimes a reliable brand's product lasts a year. The thin ends of the bell curve don't make much of a difference. :)

Kenmore outsources to  everybody now. So who knows who made your stove. I have a small appliance store and a 30 year service guy. He and I agree anything by whirlpool seems to have a better chance of making it through tghr years.May be you can get theis fixed at a resonable cost. Thats what I would try first. Yoou need to stop using the stove now and contact a service guy fromm your area.

thanks TD

Both Kenmore and Craftsman are Sears "brand names".

They've ALWAYS been out-sourced.

However, the long model number of the item will reveal who the OEM is of each model machine.

Both Kenmore and Craftsman items are offered in "tiered" price/quality models.

If you buy a $29.99 sanding machine, as opposed to a Craftsman Professional $79.99 sander, do you REALLY expect the same performance and longevity?

Actually, it's extremely easy to figure out who made a Kenmore product. appliance411.com has an OEM chart for Kenmore products. You just take the MFR model number and find the first three digits. That tells you who made it. And Kenmore ranges are only made by two companies: Electrolux and Whirlpool (certain dual ovens only).

The Kenmore 98023 is an awesome range. One of the best selling premium models Sears carries, and very solidly built. Made for us by Electrolux, one of the world's greatest consumer cooking product manufacturers.

It is so funny how people with these "years of experience" in the business just suggest these other manufacturers products in comparison to Kenmore. You act like we just have any Tom, Dick, or Harry make our products? The reality is the same competition you suggest as a replacement makes products for us. So question is it just that they're just making an inferior product under the Kenmore brand or can they as BlueCrewGuyInMa suggested just be an unfortunate prolblem not reflective of the whole product line or brand?

That is exactly my situation, too!  I grew up thinking Kenmore was extremely reliable; we have Kenmore appliances that have worked well for decades.  Once I started looking around at other review sites, I wasn't so sure anymore.  I guess "they don't make things like they used to" applies to so many 'affordable' things today.  I will probably go ahead with the KE Elite double, because I want it before Thanksgiving.  However, I won't be as confident in my brand choice until Kenmore has proven it's long term reliability to me once again when this range lasts forever.  The reviews for Sears online on Consumer Reports were scary (only 1 star) and stopped my purchase.  The reviews made me wonder, if Sears has such an awful track record on customer service and repairs...has the overall quality & reliability of their products lessened? I expected not to need repairs if I bought a Kenmore, based on our history with washers, dryers, dishwasher.

But...our appliances are older (reliable) products; can I trust the brand name still?  Our Kenmore dishwasher must be around 40 years old! Still works fine, but obviously design improvements have been made over the years & it's time for a new one.  I have an awesome Tappan 'double side-by-side oven on top with a sliding  side-by-side 4 burner/cutting board drawer, and two full storage cabinets under the stove' which must be around 40, too.  Nothing I have found compares.  My ovens are at eye level - no bending down to check on food; it is a bit more narrow than standard counter width when the burner drawer is closed; and wider than the standard 30in.  I have about 40inches of space to fill when I replace this.  Does anyone know of any oven/stove combo anything like this old Tappan?

If not, I hope the Kenmore dual oven will serve us almost as well (minus the much needed storage:( ).  Since Electrolux builds this model, I guess thats a good sign. I wish there were a dual convection oven/induction top model available - for $1800-ish!

I have a stove that suddenly seems to be getting very hot along the front edge (right over the oven handle) when the stove is on but no burners are on.  It's a Whirlpool model GR460LXK, electric with a black glass cooking surface, purchased at Sears about 7-1/2 years ago.  I don't remember having to be worried about this problem before.

We checked, and the vent under the control knobs appears to be letting heat out as expected.  No "hot surface" lights came on, and it was possible to put my hand on the burner area but I was tentative about it since it also seemed unusually hot.  I'm used to putting hot pads on the unused burner surface so I can set a hot pan there (without scratching the glass) when I take it out of the oven, so I'm certain it wasn't that warm from just having the oven on before now.

My husband and I discussed calling for a local repair person, but I thought maybe you folks could provide some advice before we do that.  Thanks.

It's really not very  funny what happened to you. That would scare the sxxt out of anybody. At least you get a new range.
