LockedConvection Oven... Big Benefit???

posted on May 01, 2009 at 03:18PM Inappropriate?

I'm currently in the market for new appliances. I've been looking at ranges and many have a convection oven feature. I understand that it circulates air to cook more evenly, etc. However, I'm looking for advice from anyone in the know that can tell me if it's really worth the extra money? On a scale from 1 to 10 (1=never to 10=always), I'm probably a 7.5 on how much I cook.

Any advice is appreciated!

If you bake breads, or do a turkey for Thanksgiving, or make cookies/brownies/etc., or do roasts, or any large piece of meat or baked goods, convection will be of great benefit for you. It does improve the cooking results, allows you to cook multiple trays of baked goods at the same time (instead of one tray at a time), and cooks up to 1/3 faster.

For the $100-200 difference in price, you'll be really happy with the improved results and cooking time. Nobody goes from convection back to conventional.

Just make sure it's true/European convection, and not "Accu-Bake" or "basic convection," which is just the fan, without the heating element for the fan.

Happy hunting!

I wasn't sure and really not even in the market for the convection feature -- I'm so glad I purchased my oven with that feature -- I use it ALWAYS and not only does food cook faster, it tastes better.

True convection ovens are great for cooking and bring many benifits to the table such as, faster cook time, even baking, and larger quantity. If you use the oven 3 or more times a week convection is the way to go!

A true convection oven (and there are many wannabes) will cook 25 to 30% faster, at lower tepts, and offer superior results.

The heat gets into the food faster, and the heat is very even in all areas of the oven.

I think its worth it just based on the time it would save you.

I have the "Nuwave oven" it has a fan and heating element on the top its not as nice as the convection ranges you find in the new Kenmore elite models though works on same principle.  I use it everyday you can take a frozen burger add a little Louisiana steak sauce and its ready in 15 min. Juicy and bursting with flavor you wonder how you lived so long without convection.
