LockedWhatever happened to freestanding double ovens?

I've got this great 22 year old Whirlpool freestanding electric double oven at home. But i've noticed that no company makes them anymore! And before you point me at the myriad of models we have at sears with two cavities - none of these are what i truly consider a double oven in the same sense as the kind i have. What i have is a standard 30" range, but instead of controls on the back of the stovetop, that area is a large metal bracket which holds another oven cavity up above the stove - thus positioning it almost precisely in the same mannar as an MHC would be.

About a year ago i started looking hard for double ovens of that style, as the age of my current one is now a concern. So far, the only thing that i have seen that comes close are boutique models from Heartland, but they don't have a full size oven up top, just a small cavity sized for loafs of bread i think. While im hoping my current Whirlpool will last forever, i know it will inevitably kick the bucket and i'll have to choose something else.

I was just wondering if there was anyone else out there that was dissapointed with the lack of old style freestanding double ovens? I know a lot of people personally who loved them, and have had quite a few customers ask about them, too - but obviously if no major manufacturer makes them anymore, there must not be any more demand for them? I'd like to prove them wrong, because i would really like a modern freestanding double oven!

(The current style of freestanding double oven doesnt cut it for me - i really got used to having an oven at eye level. Seems there are only two options now for me - go back to a built in wall oven and seperate stovetop, or get a freestanding range and add a Whirlpool Velos MHC over top of it.)

My guess is that, with the thinner gauge steel used to make the ovens lighter and cheaper, such a model would be excessively top-heavy, and thus too potentially dangerous.

with the popularity of over the range microwaves those ovens didn't sell well so they were discontinued. you can get the same effect with a free standing range and over the range convection/microwave unit. the sizes of over the range units vary and are close to the size of double ovens with the second unit at eye level

I, too, have been searching for a replacement for a nearly 40-year-old Frigidaire "range"  of the type that Gumpo described!  I am 99% certain it was the original unit which came with this (1970-vintage) house I bought in 1995.  It is a freestanding 30" model, with an overall height of approx. 73".  All of the kitchen cabinets are "sized around" the Frigidaire: countertops on either side, with overhead cupboards, and a small odd-ball double cupboard above "Frigi".

And, now "Frgi" is getting CRANKY:  two burners (actually, seems to be controls) are dead, and the lower oven won't crank above approx. 350 degrees.  I just spent $65 for YET another burner element.....and am thrilled to have TWO burners again.  Oh yes, the clock died several years ago  LOL!

With my Frigidaire, the upper-most section holds the exhaust blower, then directly below that section is the smaller/upper "eye level" oven, with all six controls (4 burners plus two ovens) mounted on a plate to the right of that upper oven.

A free-standing unit with an upper convection/microwave/exhaust oven would be fine with me, but I haven't found such a unit anywhere.  I want to "slide in" something similar to the Frigidaire to avoid a bazillion <g> dollars in remodeling costs (times ARE tight these days....), such as replacing/extending the backsplashes from either side, especially since I have NO idea what "lives behind" the Frigi......

Thanks!

Brian

I miss the wood-burning stoves.

But, I got my old Jotul wood-burning stove...
