Craftsman 10 in. Compound Miter Saw with Laser Trac —
Left handed people, such as myself, always have trouble with tools that are made for the vast majority. I have suffered from both injury and poor ergonomics. In shopping for a new miterbox, this saw has a feature that makes left handed use the best in its class. It has a rotating handle and a blade guard that seem to have been designed for both left and right handed people. My last miter box lacked these features and was actually dangerous to use. With this saw, crossing hands directly infront of, and applying pressure to the blade guard is not necessary. Material can be clamped from either side and the rotating handle allows you to use your left hand on the trigger without close proximity to the blade.
As far as operation, if you are a perfectionist like me, plan on spending some time squaring and aligning the saw. It is pretty good out of the box--but is has the capability of being extremely accurate. It takes a little time, but once you are finished, the saw cuts true and straight and all angle settings are spot-on. The hardest to set up is the Laser. Out of the box it works ok--but I am a perfectionist. It is a little tricky to get set up properly and is barely visible in direct sunlight. Even so, it is a great aid to make fast and accurate cuts--this is an awesome feature. The electric brake is a nice safety feature and rapidly stops the blade after each cut--this feature speeds up production work since you do not have to wait for the blade to stop inbetween cuts. The adjustable fence has a removeable design which increases its versatility--the first week I had the saw I found it necessary to remove it for some special cuts. If I had any complaints, they would have to be the stand. The only thing I could say about it, is that it is free. It is a little short causing you to have to bend over to use the saw, and the stand does not have material extensions (the saw has about 12" built in to it on both sides). This saw begs to be mounted on one of Craftsman's large mobile miter stands. This is especially true if you are working with very long material. After 2 weeks, I bought a new miter stand. I mounted my Craftsman band saw on the one that came with the saw--it is perfect height. The new miterbox stand combined with this saw are an unbeatable combination.
In conclusion, for the price, features, and durability, you cannot go wrong with this saw. Even out of the box, with the stand it comes with, it is still a great saw. If you are a lefty, it appears as the only option on the market.
