I bought this planer as an addition to my shop, and I'm sold. This little beauty not only cost less than $200, the cut quality is second to none. I plane a lot of stock for mouldings, and this machine does it all. I'll definitely be keeping this for many years to come. Highly recommended!
I have had this planer for 8 months or so. I've used it on several different types of wood including exotics. The other day it started making a horrible grinding noise. I immediatly shut it down and removed the wood it was working on. Turns out the bolt that holds the blade lock in place came out. That let the blade lock slide against the key in the shaft and has made quite a mess out of things. All in all it's not a bad planer but before you use it make sure all of the bolts are tight.
Very nice economical planer for the money. little bit of snipe when trying to take too much stock off, keep your cuts light and works just as nice as the much more expensive planers out there.
bought this beauty to fix trim boards throughout house damaged by cat claws. Works excellent. The only complaint is the snipe issue on both ends. To ease it, use a companion board. this will help. I find as long as there is a board end to end there is no snipe
I ran a few Red Oak 5/4 X 5 1/2 boards through and it handles it very nicely. There is a small amount of snipe on each end, but I think if the boards were supported better it would have reduced that. Also ran a 2 1/8 X 12 X 8 Hemlock through multiple times and is planed very smoothly at 1 7/8 now. Don't forget to hook up the shopvac, and empty it often, this little machine makes alot of chips!
I just got this planer and so far it's a great machine. Much better than all that sanding I was doing. But I noticed mine didn't plane evenly which meant the roller blades are not parallel with the base. Reading the manual on how to fix that makes no sense and seems complicated. Then I read about greasing the chains and found them hard to get to with no real instruction from the manual. So I'm a little concerned about maintaining the planer without having to take it apart to do it. I only rated reliability and durability at 3 because I haven't had it long enough to know, given my concerns about...review »
I wanted a planer and Sears had this 12 1/2 inch planer on sale so I bought it, set it up, and ran 5 boards through it 60 x 11 1/2 x 2 1/4 planed them all to 2 inch . The planer had some difficulty with the cherry board. So far no problems.
I am not a carpenter; my woodworking is done on a smaller scale, mostly in scale modelling, furniture-making and musical instrument making, so I not only don't need large-scale power and capacity in my tools, such properties can be hazardous to my fingers.
I've wanted a planer for a long time, since I need to be able to reduce commercially available lumber to thicknesses less than the usual minimum of 3/4". However, both the prices (starting around $400) and the size of the availible models have deterred me from buying one for years. This one was available at a reasonable cost, didn't take up too...review »
I?ve had this planer for about a month and I had intended the planer to be temporary until I could afford something like the Dewalt 735 planer. However, the results from this planer were so good that I think I?ll keep it. All that had to be done to get it working is to assemble the crank and install the dust chute. The cut quality is superb! Very smooth finish and hardly noticeable snipe. So far I?ve planed pine, red oak, and walnut with fantastic results. This is probably the best money I?ve spent so far since I only paid around $170 on sale and with Craftsman Club savings. The only thing...review »
This is my first planer and I bought this as a "getting started" unit. It was easy to set up and I was planing wood in under an hour. I bolt it to a WorkMate it's very stable.
I do get snipe in the first couple of inches. Some of this may be technique. I'm still working on it. I've used it to plane 1" lyptus and it worked great. It will bog down if I try to cut more than 1/32" at a time but it works fine otherwise. I have had it hang up wood and stop feeding. I found that waxing the base plate and keeping the feed rollers clean helps a lot.

I am currently building a fence...took rough sawn redwood fence from Home center building supplies...and am planing these boards..this is a great tool to have....durability (pay an extra $20 for the two years insurance, if it lasts 2 year with out problems...get an extention for insurance) reliability: buy blades ahead...order them thru the net...part center and retail do not carry them...if you are planing uneven surfaces...be ready and pay attention if the feed is being forced...just crank up the height and re plane it again...you don't need a bag for collecting dust-there is no dust, the particles...review »
I have wanted a inexpensive planer for a long time, but being a weekend warrior, I couldn't see spending a lot of $$$$, then I saw this planer for less than $200, and I was interested. I have used it a few times, and it worked great. Virtually no snipe, and a very smooth finish.
I do wonder about one feature...in the middle of the feed side, there is a small notch that protrudes down toward the table not allowing you to take much of a cut. If you have smaller boards, you can go on either side of it and cut a full 1/32". Anyone know if this is a normal feature??
I've only had it a short time but I really like it so far! I have not used many other planers so I cant really compare it fairly. Be aware, atleast with mine, there is some snipe. About the first and last two inches. Not a big deal for me I just cut that part off. If you do this just make sure you account for that loss before you cut it. I rated it 4 only because I have not had it very long but I would recommend it. Works well and the price is right.
I've had this unit for a couple months now and am very happy with it.
I've been working with maple, mahogany and a little cocobolo rosewood and it hasn't missed a beat.
Minimal if any snipe and plenty of power, makes it a very good value.
I only gave it 4 stars on reliability and durability because I have not had it long enough to really tell how well it will hold up.
It seems to be built well, so I'm expecting it will hang in there for a long time.
