Drill Press is Rotationally Challenged

Craftsman 12&#34 Drill Press 21914 —

Quality assurance is lacking with respect to Craftsman drill presses. After pickup, assembly, disassembly, and return of four different Model 12400 drill presses in succession back to Sears, I'm rather disenchanted with Craftsman power tools. While some of the features of this drill press are handy (ergonomic handle, digital depth readout, and hefty size for a bench-top press), they can't seem to manufacture a product that is free of rotational defects. In an age of high-technology, manufacturing spindles, pulleys, and shafts that are concentrically true and linear shouldn't be rocket science. The reasons for the return of the four units were as follows: Drill press #1 possessed a wobbly spindle pulley which led to excessive vibration. Drill press #2 also exhibited unacceptable vibration due to a wobbly spindle pulley. Drill press #3 had a noisy, vibrating motor. Drill press #4 had a noisy and chattering spindle bearing. Having purchased the extended warranty with each press, I could've had them repaired, but in my estimation, new out-of-the-box tools should not be fraught with manufacturing defects; hence, they were returned. Finally, I purchased a Sears Craftsman Model OR20541 15-inch floor drill press. More bad news! Following pickup and assembly, I turned the drill press ON and found it to have excessive vibration. A Sears service technician visited my home, examined the press, and found it to have a wobbly eccentric pulley and a loose eccentric mounting arm. The tech's report stated that the unit was defective and not repairable. The press was returned to Sears for a refund.
