“new batteries cost more than the whole set-up!”
I had a great Craftsman 14.4V drill and flashlight set. They worked well for quite a while. As NiCad batteries do.... they failed after considerable time. I just wanted to replace them. My kit new was 84.99... on sale of course. 1- drill, 1- flashlight, 1- charger, 2- batteries.
Now 2 new batteries from Sears Parts were $159.98 plus tax and shipping. I telephoned their customer service to no avail. I suppose they are hoping that you'll upgrade to the new standard C3 19.2V drills, lights and many other tools.
I wouldn't have minded spending $50 or $60 for two new batteries. My old drill and light were working like new when the batteries failed. But I became forced to buy a new set with only one battery for $79.99 (on sale). And bought an additional C3 battery for $19.99 (on sale). But sadly the new set didn't come in a nice carry case like the old set. And the old units seemed to be of nicer construction. Especially the flashlight.
I thought the parts dept. would had been happy to move some old and outdated stock at any price... there were plenty to be had I'm told. And I would had been a happier sears customer if I could had retained my original set (for a reasonable price).
Live and learn.
I have newer stuff now... but miss the old stuff. They just felt more durable.
