Craftsman 14" Chop Saw cuts well.

I've used it several times to cut everything from thin-walled tubing to 3/8" plate steel.  I'm just a hobbyist, not a professional fabricator, but it works well for me.

The Craftsman 14" Abrasive Chop Saw with Laser Trac® (21289) is a good product for the price. That is to say, it is not the most expensive and not a Rolls Royce.

 

The only cons are,

A floppy blade guard. 

Everything else is just fine. Its function is otherwise flawless.

 

One hint though, before trying to align the laser, unbolt it then bolt it right back in place. Otherwise, you may waste a LOT of time trying to get the alignment right. Apparently, the laser is prone to movement, if bumped, during shipment.

 

  • The 15 Amp motor is good enough for hobby use.

The motor is a little under-powered. Cutting 2 X 4 11 ga mild steel tubing, no matter how fast or slow I made the downward cut, the disc would bow out and not give scquare cuts. The chain to secure the upper assembly was weak and thin. This might be good for some low end conduit or angle iron work, but not for moderate to serious fabricating.
