I bought this scroll saw after reviewing it on the web. Main reason for purchase was to cut out pine wood derby cars for our cub scouts. After comparing to a Skill model at a big box retailer I determined this one was a better buy dollar wise and more features. The only draw back so far is using a 360 degree blade with no pins to attach it, it took 15 min. to attach the plain blades. Overall a great buy!
...

The Craftsman 16 Inch Variable Speed Scroll Saw (21602) has been officially unboxed & setup in my shop & got some scrap wood to play with & check out my new scroll saw. Took it right out of the box, read the owner's manual, installed a blade & started playing. I like this saw so far. I plan on using it for a project already later today. This scroll saw accepts both, plain end blades & pin end blades. Make sure that you have the scroll saw properly secured before operating it. I used a piece of old casrpet to limit virbation on higher speeds and it worked great. the scroll saw has a dust blower to help keep your cutting line clean & free of debris to help you see your cutting line. There is a small compartment to hold spare blades and there is even a bracket to hold the hex tool that you need when changing blades. That's nice to have this tool handy when you need it and not have to look around for it while you are trying to work. I purchased additional blades when I got my scroll saw to......

I've only had it for a couple weeks but it works great for cutting sharp corners that my band saw can't handle. It's very quiet. I've been able to install plain end blades pretty easily. I've hooked up my shop vac to the dust collection port and that works well. But it creates very little dust. I'm happy I bought it and I think it's a very good value.
...

Great saw for all sorts of projects. The variable speed is great. My older model was one set speed so being able to adjust the speed really is great. Nice, solid and heavy. Tends to "walk" unless attatched to a table or work bench but that is easily solved by bolting it down to your work bench. Blade changes are easy and fairly quick but a quick change blade system would be nice.
...

I've been woodworking for many years but never thought I needed a scroll saw. Then I encountered a "cut out some animals from thin plyboard" chore for my daughters and tried to do it with a hand coping saw. After a few days of that, and reviewing tool reviews and prices, I quickly boaght the Craftsman scroll saw. It worked out of the box and has performed well for a few weeks of intensive "scrolling".

I may not be an intensive scroll sawer but having this tool opens up many interesting possibilies such as jigsaw puzzles, pattern making for my router, and very thin mosaic chip fabrication. My daughter took a hands-on demo and now she's the one who wants it for yet more craft hobbies.

I am very glad I bought this Craftsman scroll saw.
...

I've only had this saw for 1 week but so far I am very pleased. I used it last weekend to perform some cutting on my grandson's first pinewood derby car. The initial set-up was simple, except there is an error in the depiction of the lock nut and adjusting screw for the 90 degree bevel adjustment shown in figure R on page 23. As assembled in the factory, the adjusting screw was reversed from what is shown in Fig. R (item #7). I solved the problem by removing the adjusting screw and locknut, then reinserting the adjusting screw in the same direction from the factory and tightening the locknut on the underside, exactly reverse from the installation shown in Fig. R. The dust blower is also a bit weak, but my grandson had fun gently blowing the dust off as we worked. With those exceptions, the saw has met my expectations.

I bolted the saw to my workbench using 5/16 bolts and began working on the pinewood derby car. The saw operated quietly and quite smoothly, with virtually no vibration.......

I want to agree that putting in plain end is painful. Turns out, if you jam a screwdriver in there between the bottom holder and the front of the unit, you can snug down the bottom nut without it moving too much. Attempting not to vent too much, it really surprised me, I even checked the manual to see if I was doing something wrong. But nope, just profoundly bad design. I was also surprised that the plate ("fork"), and the blower are both attached only to a thin piece of plastic shroud. This made for the plate to easily come in contact with the blade. Also, I agree the blower, well, blows, but not well enough.

That being said, it's a good little saw for my first. 0 assembly required. Darn quiet. Small, good price. It didn't say on the box what blades it comes with. Turns out it's 3 pin-end of three different TPI's. Overall, I've been happy, and I'll let you know what else I find!...

This saw is well built, has a smooth cut action, and does exactly what you expect it to. The dust blower leaves a little to be desired and the saw has more vibration at high speed than I'd like - don't let this deter you, though. For a little over $100, this saw meets and exceeds expectations. For a serious woodworker, go ahead and invest in a delta or jet scroll saw. For the DIYer, the hobbyist, or the casual woodworker - this saw will be great. I love it.
...

The Craftsman 21602 Variable Speed Scroll Saw does what they say it will do. the table was set square to the blade out of the box. There were some screws loose on the plastic guard on the upper arm allowing the guard to come into contact with the arm, but after adjusting the guard and tightening the screws, it worked real well. It is very quiet and smooth until you get to the higher speeds. Would probably be better if it was bolted down to a bench. It might not compete with a $600 machine, but is an excellent entry level machine. I would definitely reccommend it for the price. Would have been 4.5 stars but the site would not allow the .5 star.
...

I'm new to scrolling. At about $120, this was a great value. My saw runs smooth - it really helps to clamp or bolt these to something heavy, this damps out vibrations. The dust blower works nicely. I've found mine even easier to use by removing the hold-down foot, just remember to hold the wood accordingly. The table is nice and heavy, and the bevel adjustment is smooth. I've had no problems getting both pin-end and plain end blades in, even 0 spiral blades work really well. I've identified the blade set screws as M6x1.0.....I'm going to track down some wing screws to see if I can upgrade this to a tool-less blade change. One complaint would be about the plastic shrouding over the upper blade arm, but this is more cosmetic than anything else.
...

As I looked at several other saws I noticed this was the cheapest of the ones I was looking at and it also had the best review. It worked great out of the box with little set up time. If I had to find something wrong with this saw, I wish it had a small LED light on it so you can see a little better when cutting. But overall I love this scroll saw and its a great price!
...

I have owned this saw for 18 months. Sears has had it most of that time. Today was the last straw. It stopped running in the middle of a project, and, since tomorrow is trash day, it will be gone from the curb before I get home from work. The electronics in my unit quit several times, and was never properly repaired. Two of the five times it came back from Sears service (which was always weeks later than promised). there we parts missing, knob and cowling. Working with Sears service would be a whole different disgusting review.

I am a fan of Sears and Craftsman, but they really blew this one. I have always had good service from Sears and was very surprised at how badly I was treated by their service department on Beach Street in Fort Worth, and their unwillingness to back up their product.

I do not recommend this product. It would be better to spend more money and get a better one, or get one from **************.
...

There is no need to twist the set screw till you can't turn it no more. Just a simple quick tightening and the blade is held securely. The blade system may not be the best but it is very adequate for the price of the saw.
...

I recently went to purchase my third craftsman scroll saw as I have been very pleased with the previous 2 over the years. To my disappointment the price range model ($119) that I had been using had a major design change. The blade can not be adjusted to cut from the side (45 degrees from the frontal cut). This limits the length of the wood that can be passed through the saw to the depth of the throat, 16 inches. Since most of my designs are longer than that, I cannot use this saw and will have to shop somewhere else....

Most scroll saws researched were a lot more money. This one is being used for cutting out parts for a model, so it is perfect for me. The fact that it is too heavy for me to pick up tells me that it is made out of quality materials and that it will last. Changing the blade is a little inconvenient and that just takes getting used to. It meets my expectations of a Craftsman product and is great for my first scroll saw....

I struggled for 2 hours to get this to hold plain end blades. It simply won't hold the really small ones. The design for holding plain end blades is very bad. As you screw in the hold down screw, it torques the holder so far to the right, the blade comes right out. If I had a third hand, maybe it would work.
It handled pin-end blades just fine.
However, I took the saw back to Sears, and it won't handle 1/2 of the blades it says it handles.
