Bought this snow blower in Jan of 2011 after getting hit with a few different snow storms during that record breaking winter season. I was debating whether to buy a single stage blower or to pony up the extra money to get a 2-stage. My fear was that the single stage might not be powerful enough when...

Most Helpful Critical Review

I've owned this for one full winter and am halfway through winter number two. I've got several issues. 1. the electric start gears sheared off and stripped so the electric start doesn't work, 2. the pull cord rubs where it goes into it's housing and eventually frays and breaks, 3. the unit plugs constantly...

Craftsman 179cc 4 cycle Single Stage Snow... Reviews

Displaying reviews 1 - 13 of 35 in total

This gas snow blower might work for those that receive only 2 to 3 inches of snow per snowfall. Living in South Dakota, I shouldn't have tried this snow blower in the first place. Since Sears did not have their $599 best buy model and any other models in the $600 too $800 range in stock, I decided to give this a try.  In my first opinion, I thought this blower was very cheaply built with plastic parts. Started just fine with electric start. When I tried it on some powdery 2" snow area, it cleaned it nicely. But when I tried it on about 6 inches of snow, it just wouldn't move a bit and I had to...

Craftsman 179cc 4 cycle Single Stage Snow Thrower with Electric Start

Purchased 1/28/2011. Machine works nice ! Easy to assemble and started right up. Electric start is nice. Pull starts easy when warmed up (haven't tried pull start when cold yet). Live in Westchester NY and had 15" of wet, heavy snow and the **** thing threw it 15-20' ...

Wow, this snow blower made quick work of the snow this winter.  I wasn't too happy to invest that kind of money in an item I wasn't sure we would be using.  We got our money's worth out of it this year.

I bought this snow thrower on-line because it wasn't available locally (it is not quite winter yet).  I HIGHLY recommend that NO ONE buy large equipment items on-line and have it shipped to them.  Mine arrived with broken and missing parts.  UPS does not handle these items with any care or regard of the contents.

Go to the store and buy the item there.  It will save you a ton of hassle, and about an hours worth of your time with having to deal with support in trying to resolve the situation.

I'll post another review after I use the snow thrower for the first time.

I have to say that I was pretty skeptical after reading some of the poor reviews.  But considering this was one of the last snowblowers available in Maryland and I have a driveway that is on the smaller side (35' x 50)I bought it.  It started on the first pull and I don't ever see the need for the electric start.

It powers through snow as long as it is less than 10 inches high.  When I woke up to 16 inches, I was able to shovel a path down the center of my driveway and then just take smaller bites with the auger and it did a great job.  It throws the snow a good 30 feet if it is of the lighter...

First Snow Thrower

This is my first snow thrower and it has been a good experience. It starts first time every time with the hand-pull---I've not had to use the electric start. I used it the first time on our first 9" NE Ohio snow fall and it cleaned mostly down to the blacktop with no trouble and threw the wet snow probably15 feet. I had to "nudge" it a little to go up my incline but it cleaned my 80 ft drive in 35 minutes with no problems. I would buy another one.

It works!

I was skeptical of buying a single stage snow thrower but this one has exceeded my expectations. In Chicago we got hit with about 12-16 inches of snow over two days and this went right through it and handled most of the heavy snow without any trouble. I did have some issues with slush that clogged the nozzle but I would not let that stop me from buying this model again. It shoots 12 inches of fairly heavy snow about 15-20 feet depending on the wind.

poor construction

After using this snow thrower for the first time, I was impressed how easily it cut through the 4 inches of snow in front of my home. It did struggle with the pile the street plow left at the end of my driveway. When looking at the rubber augers after the first use, I noticed considerable wear. When starting it for the 3rd time, the rope did not fully recoil. This was enough for me to take it back. I spend only $100 more (with a 10% off coupon) and bought the 2 stage 24inch Craftsman. Overall, the 179cc single stage was a decent machine for light to medium snow falls, but I would spend the extra... read full review »

Good Machine Thus Far

I bought this unit about a week and a half ago. So far it has been a very good machine. Not only has it been bitter cold in NW Ohio, but the winds have caused the snow drifts to pile up in my driveway and walkways in addition to the snowfall. This unit has started via the pull cord each time. (the electric start is a bonus) It has also removed snow that has drifted up to the top of the chute with relative ease. I would recommend this model for the typical weather we have.

My back loves this machine!!!!!

I've had this blower for just over a month now. I've used it 4 times on varying levels of snowfall and it's worked beautifully on every level. It's easy to operate, and cleans right down to the pavement. What used to take me over an hour and a half to shovel (and the pain to boot) now takes me about 15-20 minutes). I can even get rid of the stuff that the city plow decides to BLAST back into my driveway!!! When the snow gets slushy, or there is a lot of moisture, you do have to disengage the auger and shake it a bit, but it's nothing out of the ordinary, or that you wouldn't have to do with any... read full review »

Good for the price

I shopped around and was very happy with the performance of this machine for its price. I am a mom of two small children whose husband travels a lot. I need something that will allow me clean the driveway quickly. I used it on about a four inch fairly wet snow in Northeast Ohio this week and it worked great. It started right up with electric start and cleared the snow great with the first pass, even the heavy stuff at the end. I would recommend this to others. It is lightweight and easy to use.

Love it!!!!

I am a 66 year old woman who bought this for my 2400 sq ft driveway and was able to use this with no problem with all the snow we have gotten here in Buffalo. I am only 5" tall and a small woman. Works better than they say. Would rate it higher if I could. Easy to start with electric start, GREAT BUY!!!!

I like it!

I don't have a lot of experience to base this on. We had an electric snow thrower. It's been enough to handle most snowfalls here in N.E. Ohio. In January, I used it after we got hit with over a foot of snow. The snow just laughed at me and my little thrower. After some online research, I decided on this guy. The only one available within 25 miles was a floor model. That worried me a bit. But this thing is great. Even after additional ice, snow and a little bit of melting took place, this blower ate through everything that wasn't a solid block of ice. It takes a while to warm up and stay started,... read full review »
