It's Definitely a Keeper

Craftsman 18" Push Reel Mower —

Just finished my first cutting... I'm absolutely going to keep this mower. Time will tell if this is a 5 star product, but easily 4 stars right out of the box. Bonifides: I'm 51, 30lbs overweight and it's 95 degrees outside. I have bermuda in the front and St Augustine in the back yard.. I tried a reel mower years ago and it was awful. My how things have changed. You'll want to overlap cutting about 1/2 the mower width to ensure an overall uniform cut. Because of the blade curve you'd think you'd end up with some kind of wavy pattern in the grass - no; but there is that errant blade here and there, so overlap. You don't have wheel ruts in the grass because the mower is so much lighter. The mower did not complain about the St. Augustine. The blades always turned when I pushed, the wheels never slipped. I did get I-dont-know-what jammed in the blade a couple of times - a gentle push on the blade with my foot cleared that easily. Very much more maneuverable than a power mower. It is so much lighter than any power mower. Of course pushing is more effort than being pulled along by self-drive, but this thing really is easier to push than you dared hope. The handle moves from almost level with the ground to over 90 degrees - no problem getting the needed leverage to get started or turn. Pulling back is very easy - the blade isn't being turned. Easily lifted with one hand to carry to another mowing spot or simply "reverse" the handle and push it (without engaging the blade). The little things make a big difference. They all add up to a better mowing experience. Stopping is no longer a struggle in trying to keep hold of that dead-man lever. Simply pushing starts this mower! It doesn't matter how fast I walk. The blade is going to rotate the same RPF (revolutions per foot) no matter what; effectively cutting even when walking very slowly. With a power mower I didn't realize how fatiguing all that noise and vibration was until there wasn't any. Oh, and I don't worry about rocks flinging out at warp speed or pranging the blade. I got half my storage shed back! The mower handle stores upright - and it's light enough to hang on the wall or from the ceiling.
