Very Noisy, Trips 20A Breaker, Decent Power

Craftsman 2 hp Vertical Portable Tank Air Compressor, 33 gal. —

This compressor is ok. It is very loud, however. It is almost too loud to be standing next to it without ear protection. Apparently, this loud noise is often associated with the non-oil lubed compressors. Power is excellent. 8.6 cfm at 40psi, and 6.4 cfm at 90psi is outstanding. Unit is heavy, though. Can't really lug it up and down stairs by myself. Had to have a friend help me out. The wheels, which are plastic, also don't lend themselves well for transporting up and down stairs. Unfortunately, this Craftsman "red" compressors will trip all of my shop's dedicated 20A 120V breakers occasionally on startup. My receptacle is only 10 feet from the breaker, and it's up to code - 12 gauge wire, 20A receptacle, 20A Square D breaker. (The manual says a dedicated 15A circuit should suffice, but 20A is an option if the breaker/fuse trips.) I'm assuming that it has to do with the random positioning of the motor on startup--occasionally, I can imagine the motor being in a position that has little mechanical advantage on startup--thus, requiring a higher amperage draw initially to get the motor turning. I've heard others converting their compressors to 220VAC (which should decrease the amperage requirement by half). However, this model is only able to run in 120VAC. In fact, I've purchased 2 of these compressors. I've returned the first because it kept tripping the breaker, and I thought it was defective. However, after I bought the second one and noticed that it still tripped the breaker, I was convinced that the compressor was not defective, but just an amperage hog. I've decided to return this model and purchase the Craftsman Professional 25 gal hotdog type "black" compressor. It has the ability to run in 240VAC, which may alleviate my intermittent breaker tripping problem. I plan on using the compressor in my basement, and I will plumb it out to my garage. It would be annoying for me to run down the stairs and reset the breaker every time my compressor trips it. Otherwise, this unit is ok. My brother has had a 30 gal red compressor Craftsman for 10 years, and it's still working (but also occasionally tripping the breaker). My advice: buy a compressor that's oil lubed--and much quieter.
