Craftsman 2 hp Vertical Portable Tank Air Compressor, 33 gal. —
I bought this about 2.5 years ago mainly to support a custom motorcycle paint business that I have on the side. It is LOUD! Now I use it mainly for support in my little machine shop, I only run it about once every couple of weeks because it's loud. The rest of the time, it stays unplugged due to excessive loudness.
Lately it has taken longer & longer to trip the pressure switch, so now I get to hear it for twice the time as before... Did I mention it's loud?
It also now trips the breaker (15A) often before it's full. I looked into it's innards to see what could be done & found some good reasons for the issues... The piston is a one piece cast affair. When I say "one piece", that means the connecting rod is part of it! Yep, no pivot. The piston rocks in it's bore probably 15 or 20 degrees inclusive. Add a little time, heat, & dirt & it's ability to create a seal is challenged at best. This I believe aggravates the noise, & of course the longer cycle causes our poor 30 year old circuit breakers to give up.
Yeah, I know the dry types are noisy.... But I cannot handle being in my garage while this is running.
Take the money this one costs, add another C-note & get one with a real pump! The rest of it is great, if I could just find a retrofit pump kit, I'd be much happier. I also might attempt to make a piston & rod for it just to see if it works.
