Seems like the snow gets heavier every year. This year we decided we needed some help. Could not rationalize the high prices of Honda/Toro/Ariens. Sorted out that this was the replacement for the highly rated model in Consumer Reports. Have used it 5 times in the past month. Does a remarkable job. We've had all types of snow. The light fluffy stuff gets jettisoned about 50 feet away (at least). Even the really wet heavy snow is hurled 10-12 feet away. Once the snow was so heavy that slush clogged the discharge chute. This is very easy to unclog. So far, no problem with the dreaded sheared bolts,... review »

There are certain things good about this blower. It has a briggs and straten engine and it is quite. Other then that it should be put in the SINGLE stage catogory not 2. The fuel tank is very small, runs out fast. to light for anything other than small jobs or light snow. And make sure you carry a cresent wrench with you when you operate it. Bolts and handle bars and other stuff fall off or come loose. This is a very cheaply made machine.

I bought this snow blower after much research. I had several criteria that I wanted met: "power steering," Briggs engine, and the cost had to be under $1000. This snow blower met all three of my criteria. I looked into purchasing other brands like Toro and Simplicity, however, even though they are almost unanimously considered to be better machines overall, I found them all to be cost prohibitive. I personally couldn't justify spending $1300 -$1500 on a snow blower that will only be used 10X a year at very most here in CT. I found this machine to be a good buy for all of the features it has compared... review »

I got the machine when I moved into my home, fearing the contimuation of a miserable winter. The first time I used it was to clear a rarely used driveway that had been snowed in for a couple of weeks with about 10 inches of heavy snow with a moderate crust. Machine started immediately, and in about 10 minutes I had cleared 30 feet of driveway. After the last snowstorm, I cleared the property in about 45 minutes - 6 inches of very heavy snow, 200 feet of sidewalk, and 80 feet of driveway, including a 2 inch diameter branch that had fallen during the storm. The machine stalled when the branch jammed... review »

This is a great machine! It powered through the mixed snow that had landed that storm and tackled some of the older stuff that had iced up. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that after only the first use, one of the bolts that hold the handle bar to the machine, had wiggled out. After the second use, guess what happened? Yup, you got it. the second one on that side came out also! Grrrr. I called Sears and they did send out the replacement bolts. I gotta say Sears, though, I have spent way to much time making repairs to a BRAND NEW MACHINE! To prevent this happening again, I also added... review »

*I live near Chicago IL, and my driveway is 100ft long and 21ft wide so when my 1982 Toro 724 puked its guts (through a rod) onto my driveway Saturday 01/10/09 and left me with 6 inches of snow and only the driveway finished, I was sick. I thought about replacing the engine, but with the age of the Toro it just didn't make sense. A little research on the internet helped me decide on a new Craftsman 88690 which is a lot cheaper than a new Toro and according to Consumers Reports almost a tie for quality. When I unpacked it and read the owner's manual I was a little disappointed to find out there... review »

I added an additional garage with another 90' drive to clear along with the old drive. I have been using a Toro that had difficulty in throwing the snow far enough and took 11/2 hours to clear the snow. I have to throw in one direction because of the winter winds. The Craftsman starts with one pull and cut my time of clearing the drives to 1/2 hour. In fact I did my drive and my neighbors drive in one hour.

Too bad I purchased this unit so late in the season! I haven't had the chance to see what it really is capable of. We have a 100ft. driveway and it cleared it of four inches of snow in very short order. The snow thrower has exceptional power and it starts on the first pull. Assembly required only one wrench, and took just ten minutes. The instruction manual is very detailed, and includes all the information needed to operate the unit. This may sound weird, but I actually can't wait to get to use it again.

Many years ago, my husband bought me one of these snowblowers as a gag gift for my birthday. I LOVE it!!!!! (The electric start is a marvellous shoulder saver!) I have some 2000 sq ft of concrete to clear, and with this machine I can usually get the job done in less than an hour. Having this snowblower makes winter fun again.

After a couple of years shoveling or paying a plow driver to move snow and leave me, leaving me the cleanup near Garage doors and both the front and back walkways to each door, I started to think that there is a better way. I checked Consumer reports and headed directly to Sears where I bought the Craftsman 250cc 28" path Snow Thrower. As Consumer Reports listed, it had more then I ever expected. I like to plug it in and use the electric starter. It starts on the first try if I have the choke set right. No trouble starting after several months of good weather, when it sits in storage either....

I had planned to buy the 24" 2-stage for $599 but got a leftover from last year, a 26" with OHV Tecumseh engine for 540 instead. After 2 wks. of sitting in my garage, much of the oil had leaked out onto the floor from either a cracked block or cylinder cover/cover gasket. I returned to Sears and told the salesman I had dealt with previously. I thought he would just send out a service tech but, no, he said, "We'll send out a new one, assembled, and pick the old one up tomorrow (Sunday)". He checked the inventory and no 26" were left so he asked if I would mind taking a 28" instead at no extra charge.... review »

Just purchased this unit a week ago. Assembly was easy, starting was easy, although I dont quite understand the idea of an electric starter with no battery. No problem however. Have not had to replace shear pins yet contrary to what I have heard, although I havent overworked this unit yet. Did manage to pick up a hidden rock big enough to stall the motor without shearing the pins. My only complaints would be 1)the lack of a cable to adjust the throw trajectory, and 2)the chute control arm rubs against the valve cover. Not good!! After some use, the threaded portion of the arm loses contact with... review »

Got 8" of snow a few days after I bought it. It worked Great. Couldn't ask for a better machine. Starts with one pull or electric start. The one pull start is so easy I probably will not ever use the electric start.

I purchased this unit October 8th before the official snow season had started. I got an excellent price. I looked at all brands of snowblowers and I mean everything. It comes down to how much do you want to spend. Yes, there are better built units out there. Be prepared to pay. This unit had an excellent sale price 20% lower than the current sale price. I work in construction, work is slow so I decided to purchase what I wanted to afford and purchased the Sears MTD product. Now to the product itself. I wanted the Briggs and Stratton Overhead valve engine because it polutes less, is quieter than... review »
