I purchased the Craftsman 283 pc Mechanic Tool Set on sale for $349 about a two weeks ago. I buy all my tools from Sears and they must have the Craftsman brand. This particular day I was dead set on buying a new tool box complete with tools. I saw this deal and could not pass it up. I bought it swiftly...

Most Helpful Critical Review
I have this tool set to supplement my primary tools and to have a more portable tool set to work on my tractors and other equipment. The tools and box are very nice. However, the trays for the drawers are vacuum formed out of a very cheap plastic and I expect that they will deteriorate quickly. Also,... read full review »

Great set of tools for the backyard mechanic. The tool box is of cheap quality but it is nice that they have marked inserts in the drawers for the tools. Of course the lifetime warranty is awesome. Pretty much has every socket, ratchets, extensions etc.. you will ever need.

I got this tool set for the organizer trays but I the hot summers in Central California they melted. I tried to get them replaced and they are only purchasable with the drawers. The cost was close to what the set cost so now it's just a pile of tools.

high lights - the box is a decent quality though heavy

the assortment will take you through the most common applications/assignments pretty well

low lights - broke the 3/8 rachet in the first week - this not the product you want to tackle abused /neglected auto vehicles with.

comb wrenches will get through in a bind but i find my self reaching for my boss' long handles before sorting through my standard length bunch.

as with all things there are trade offs - this will get a young aspiring mechanic started on building up his tool collection - but make No doubt about it - he/she will need...

This is a great starter set of tools, and has pretty much every socket you will ever need, plus ratches, extensions, etc.  The tools are typical Craftsman quality; they aren't any different than what you'd buy individually.  The 3/8" socket after about a year isn't working as good as it should be, and a socket cracked.  It's not a big deal because I can get them replaced for free.

The toolbox is cheap quality.  It has the very basic slides, which are awful.  The trays to organize the tools are cheap plastic, but so far I haven't broekn one.  The names and numbers are very hard to read on...

I bought this item yesterday for my husband after seeing online that it was on sale. It was a little heavy for me to carry but that is because it has so many wonderful tools inside of it. The tools come bagged so you have to take the time to organize them into their designated spaces in the provided plastic organizer trays. But once everything is in its place it is the most beautiful, organized tool set for the money.

The Craftsman 283 pc. Mechanics Tool Set is worth every penny especially if you are just starting your tool collection like my husband and I are. It has all of the basic screwdrivers,...

I am about to put this set together and so far I am very pleased with the buy.  I don't see any tool that I would not use at least once in a car. Note that it is the only Craftsman set that comes with both spark plug socket sizes, that's a plus.  Compared to the other sets (even the 260 pc.) the 7 T-handle torx, the tuning wrenches, and the wider range of sockets were the reason I opted for this particular set.

On the down side, the "nice" metallic box is way too HEAVY, even when it's empty.  I have had 2 metallic boxes before, and none of them were nearly as heavy as this one.  So, if you...

Good place to start.

I go to school for diesel tech and I need a good starter set so I can work on the engines. Well let just say that this was a perfect start. It had everything I need and then some. It left me in a good place to start building my own tool set without have to ask my dad for his.

Bought this tool set when my son took his I gave him. It has all the tools that you will need to work on any of todays cars. The shipment was fast and putting the set together took no time at all. I really like the way you  can see if any tool has been removed or left on the garage floor by an empty space in the tool chest. I highly recommend this set to anyone who works on cars or just fixes common things around the house. This set has all you will ever need
