Craftsman 33cc Full Crank Gas String Trimmer Straight shaft Convertible —
I waited until I used this machine a few times. (about 4 times)
I bought this because my little WeedEater was not powerful enough and its around 5 years old (I take care of my stuff) and thought I should look for something with a little 'wack', 'more power'.
I have 3 pieces of property, all are rural, and have never been taken care of.
My first project was to clear an area for my new garage...around 75'x 100' filled with some of the nastiest brush North Carolina has to offer. It's so thick with prickers, vines etc the deer made a trail around it! During the clearing of this area, I found a toilet, screen doors, a mound of bricks, a 55 gallon drum and old kerosene tank, and a 6 point deer skull all of which could not be seen until I cleared around it!
I bought the trimmer with the pole saw and the brush cutter attachments. (See those reviews..if I don't bore you)
First up..the trimmer attachment with the 'stock' red string.
It started on the 3rd pull so off I go with all the safety gear on.
THIS MACHINE CLEARED A PATH AS FAR AS I COULD SWING IT.
I felt like Conan the Barbarian going through a bar full of drunks!
Brush falling like it was grass. Some of the pricker bushes were bigger than my thumb..green and thick, this machine mowed them down.
After about 20 minutes I 'found' a mound of bricks buried under some vines, that finished the red string. I read the red .95 string is not as durable as the black .95. So I switched to the black stuff.
I finished the rest of the area with 1 piece of black string! (I bought a spool...that should last awhile!!)
I also did this mostly at half throttle! (I take care of my equipment)
Pros
It always starts with 3 or 4 pulls, squeeze the bulb 10 or 12 times
This machine has plenty of power. (about 5cc less than commercial models, but half the price)
Easy to change string
The straight shaft lets you get under stuff and make the correct angle to the ground, (much better than curved shafts)
Well balanced (move the handle to fit your arm length)
It's a clutch drive, if it gets stuck, or stuff gets wrapped around the shaft, let off the gas, shut it down and take it off. It won't get wrapped up real tight like non-clutch machines
ATTACHMENTS make this machine act like 3 or 4 different tools
Cons
It's heavy, noisy
The spool spins in the wrong direction, CCW kicking stuff at you (kick that engineer!)
All in all, it does what I need to do...clear brush.
If all you have is grass to cut, go get a smaller, lighter, quiet weed wacker.
