Craftsman 42" Two-stage Tractor Snowblower —
I have one year's experience with this snow thrower. I have been using it with a Craftsman YS4500 26 HP lawn tractor.
Initial installation took several evenings. I'm mechanically inclined, and I've rebuilt auto engines as a hobby before. This really doesn't require all that much in the way of tools, but it does take a while. Even though I had drafting in college while pursuing my engineering degree, I found some of the drawings to be somewhat non-intuitive and hard to read. I ended up having to call product support for explanation of one, and I concluded from the phone call that Sears had changed how one of their springs was installed since the instructions were printed (and the instructions were not fully updated). The phone help was semi-helpful.
The product worked wonderfully. It can throw powder in a roostertail that is simply glorious! It makes my neighbor's similar setup from a rival company look like a pathetic peashooter. Power is good when using the 26 HP, and I had no trouble with wet, heavy snow.
While storing the snow thrower for the summer, a retaining pin on the trigger and lift cable assembly came off and was lost. They did honor the warranty and sent me one, but only after I was transferred on the phone no less than 5 times (having to restate all of my information each time) and being cut off once. This was similar to an experience that I had trying to cancel an order. For these reasons, I feel merited in subtracting a star from the product rating.
When reinstalling the product for this year, I tightened all bolts that I could get a ratchet or wrench on (except for those pertaining to the lift mechanism which cannot be overtightened). I strongly reccommend that you consider doing this after each year's use, as I found several that were coming loose.
Overall, I'm very impressed by this product and I enjoy using it quite a bit.
