Craftsman 42" Two-stage Tractor Snowblower —
I live in Nashua, NH on the North Side of a large hill. My lot is on the downslope side. The City uses large dump trucks with 12' plows & 10' wings. Accordingly, they routinely leave 4'-6' high wet heavy show at the end of the driveway.
Since I bought it in Dec 07, we've had several storms of a foot or more. I have it attached to a 26 HP Garden Tractor. No problem plowing the full width (42") at 12" deep whether wet snow or powder. This is a great product. It easily throws a foot of powder 60-70 feet. It easily throws a foot of wet snow 30-45 feet. Also, I tore threw the end of the driveway without a hitch. This makes snow cleanup a blast!
The key to this unit is in spending the time reading the instructions, carefully laying out the parts and being prepared to spend the time to put it together correctly. Plan on 8 hours plus or minus.
There are two primary issues. The first is that if you are not handy, have a Pro do it. The second is to install the Drive Belt and the Auger Belt correctly. The Auger Belt sketches in the Owners Manual are incorrect and depict the LH side as the Right and vice versa, resulting in the average person installing the belt wrong, but per the instructions; and, the end result being "a shredded auger belt". Sears needs to correct the Owners Manual Sketches pronto. Once I got past this minor issue, I drew an "As-Built Sketch" showing the correct installation for the Auger Belt.
Also, I cast a custom concrete block to fit the weight tray (100 lb's) & cast concrete into the black plastic can (115 lb's) which adds a total of 215 Pounds to the GT and eliminates the need for wheel weights. Chains are required though. This puts the weight of the blower (190 lb's) the tractor (600 lb's) the reinforced concrete (215 lb's) at 1005 pounds, plus my weight of 165 for a total of 1170 lb's. At this weight it goes through anything and climbs up frozem snowbanks like nothing. Sears needs to add chains for the front tires to improve quick turns.
Now if only the Pats & Giants were playing the Super Bowl in New England during a blizzard. I'd volunteer to bring my GT & Snow Thrower to the game and clear a path for the Winning Field Goal! Sears oughta do a mock SuperBowl commercial of this sort for SuperBowl 43.
A definite buy it recommendation. Thanks again to Dave at Sears in Nashua for selling me a great product and for excellent service.
