Best in Class

I am pleased with this mower.  $180 is a fair and honest price for such a machine.

  • It cuts well even in the thickest grass with out the engine getting bogged down.
  • With no side chute or front bumper, it is easy to mow near and up against obstacles.
  • The grass bag works well (but like all bags it will...

Was VERY easy to put together, already put together for the most part. Easy to crank, use, mulches the grass clippings for composting.

I bought this mower and have mowed my lawn one time with it. It came assembled, all I had to do is add oil and it started right up. Great, I thought, how easy it was to start that first time. Now I go to take it out for the second time and it WILL NOT start. I prime it, pull the cord and the mower runs for a couple seconds and quits. I don't care how inexpensive it is, a mower should be able to start more than ONCE. Get something else.

We were looking for an affordable lawn mower that would work well and was from a brand we knew and had a good reputation.  This mower looks nice and works very well even when we've let the lawn go for a couple of weeks.  Assembly was a cinch and my fiance has had nothing but good things to say about it.  Picking it up at the store was also an easy and pleasant experience.

This mower is just what I needed to mow the areas that I cannot get to with my lawn tractor.  It is easy to maneuver around and having the bag in the rear makes it easy to get up close to things.

Because of a sale I was able to get this rear-bag version of Sears simplest mower for just 20 bucks more, but now I'm sorry I bought it.  In mulch mode (with bag removed and rear flap down) grass shoots forward from the rear cover and covers the deck and motor.  What a mess! The instructions say there is supposed to be a mulch plug but mine didn't have any in the box. Attaching the bag was fairly painless but when I went over a dry area on my lawn, the rear "dust control" bag  let out huge clouds of dust. What dust control? Again, what a mess! By the time I was done the mower was covered top...

Was great while it worked.

I have had this mower for a few months and have used it four or five times to mow my front and back yard.  However, I had to add a lot of oil everytime I wanted to use the mower.  The last time I used it, I topped off the oil and began mowing, but the engine died halfway through and will no longer start.  I checked the oil and it was empty.  No trace of oil leaks in the grass or anywhere else, no noticable blue smoke to indicate burning oil, just no oil and a now useless mower.

Worked well...twice

I purchased this mower a month ago, and the reviews are right--it was very easy to assemble and ready for mowing in minutes. My husband used it 2 times without any problem. Last week it began doing this: starting, running for a few seconds, then cutting off. It starts up easy enough but won't stay on. Gas, oil, everything looks fine. I'm hoping we can take it back. Looks like several others have had the same problem, so buyer beware.

engine wont Start

the first time it started right away...2 weeks later was time to mow again and it will not start. I followed all instructions and suggestions from my mechanical engineers friends with not success..I wasted 4 hours in 2 days and no luck...I am returning this.... I bought it because of the good reviews...maybe all of them are not truth...!

It's so good,

I'm getting another one! Best money I ever spent on a mower. I've never had a problem starting it. 3 primes, 2 pulls, it's ready to go! Cuts lawn and bags beautifully! Bag is easy to empty and put back on. I bought it for me, but my husband likes it better than his J.D. mower. He says my Craftsman mows better. I recommend it to everyone I talk to about mowers!

Craftsman 21inch self propelled mulcher w/ Honda 5.5 HP
Have had this for 2 years.  Been the worst mower we've ever had.  I had an older craftsman 22 push w/ briggs for 10 years mowing 2 large yards and a very large church yard for 4 of those years.  Lasted forever, could cut through anything (w/ 3.75 hp).  Got this to replace when other one finally died, have had engine rebuilt 2x by sears, first under warranty, second out of pocket. They changed oil after first year when they rebuilt it.  After the second year I changed the oil.. this piece of **** took tons of my time trying to figure...

I purchased the 550 series Briggs & Stratton 21" Rear Discharge mower (model 917.388191) in March 2009.  After only a few mowings in the spring the engine started sounding funny.  It would rev up and then slow down.   There is no speed adjustment on this model.  Fortunately it continues to start and mow the lawn, but it doesn't sound right.  After the Fall season ends, I plan to bring it in for a warranty repair.  Fortunately it has a two yr warranty

Tough and Double Tough

I have had this mower for over 10 years. 21" wide and the Honda 5.5hp engine. It has been the most dependable machine I have owned in 45 years. I have abused it badly on my acre of wooded hilly land and I have consumed 3 blades - that is how tough it is. All I do is change the oil every year and clean the air cleaner. That is it. The wheels are a little tough to raise and lower, but they have held up nicely. Surprisingly, the rear bag has also held up - I would have expected it to die long ago, but it is still holding up. Highly recommend and I seldom ever comment on things I have bought. Just... read full review »

Good for the price

I've only used once so far, but it seems to have good power, is lightweight, and easily maneuverable, but lack of weight means less momentum and more muscle from user to get through thick grass and uneven surfaces. I purchased this model to replace my previous craftsman mower that lasted 10+ years. It comes completely assembled; you just have to add the included bottle of oil. It will be interesting to see how long this one lasts, as its lack of weight comes from using lighter-weight metals in production, which means it's parts a somewhat flexible and may not stand up to much "man" handling. The... read full review »
