I hit a stump with my 7-year-old 6.5 HP Craftsman and bent the crank shaft. Needed a new one.
I went to the local Sears store and this mower was on sale for $269 -- $80 off the list price. I didn't how I would ever get a better mower at this price so I bought it.
I used it yesterday for the first time. Wow, what a nice little mower. I didn't have any problems with it. I put oil and gas in it, pulled the cord, and away I went.
It's much more powerful than the 6.5 horsepower Craftsman I had wrecked. Just like my old mower, this one had a bar that you depress to keep the motor runnning. It also has a second depress bar that causes the engine to engage the wheel-drive and you can vary the speed depending on how far you depress the bar. Very nice features. It lets you stop the mower, but not turn it off, simply by letting go of the speed/engage bar.
When I empty the grass catcher, I turn the motor off. That eliminates any potential blowing away of grass clippings. That's easy to do because the mower is so easy to start.
The grass catcher placement was the only thing I didn't like about the mower. It was awkward for me to attach it to the mower. There's a bar running across the handle assembly halfway between the handle and the mower that obstructs my ability to attach the catcher. But it's no big deal.
The grass catcher stays in place no matter where you take the mower, doesn't come off or leak grass.
I liked the increased speed. This is a quick powerful mower. It cuts down on my mowing time by 1/3.
It mulches better (finer). I ended up with two 30-gallon bags of clippings whereas with my old mower it was closer to 4 bags.
The finer mulch also means I don't have to empty my bag so often.
The mower is powerful, goes through medium high grass with no problem. It sucks up everything, including pine needles (my old mower would leave some needles behind -- not this one). Tall grass around edges and trees and in corners -- no problem, just raise the mower a bit and the suction sucks in the high grass and its gone.
The gas tank could be bigger. Gas tank is definitely smaller than on my old Craftsman.
I didn't have any trouble with the height adjusters adjusting on their own -- that system looks real stable, same as on my last craftsman.
This is a really nice mower. All my other craftsman have worked well, so I expect this one to do the same. All you gotta do is change the oil and the air filter once a year.
