What do I need to check or replace?  My 10 hp craftsman generator ran fine last year.  Got it out this week and now it wil fire off, but will only run for a few secnds befre dying.  Acoule of times it ran on choke for awhile, but soon dyed on choke.  Kept trying and then it finely it started running a normal for about 5 minutes, but dyed gain.  Ever since it will barely fire off before dying????

How old is your generator, and how much has it been used? The oil may need changing, as well as the air filter. Are you trying to start it with nothing plugged into it? Is the gas in the gas tank the same gas you used last year? Does the gas have fuel stabilizer in it?

Will it run with the gas cap off the tank (clogged vent hole in cap)?

The generator is three years old. After sitting up for a year, I poured a little gas into it and it only ran for short periods of time. I put it in my truck and carried it to a friends house to look at and when I arrived it cranked and ran fine. I killed it to restart and it went back to cutting off shorty after cranking. It is very spiratic, one minute it won't crank at all, to cranking and immediately cutting off, to running on choke for 5 minutes. very confused??? Yes I did try with the cap off and ats the same. Nothing is plugged in when cranking. I have since filled up with new gas...nothing changed. Air filter is like new.

Was the generator originally "run-dry" before storage.

Or, was some gas left in the tank?

Have you tried starting it without the airfilter? Airfilters get saturated with fuel and or water vapor when they run.

Maybe there is sediment in the gas tank, accounting for why a "trip" got the fuel moving and the machine running, when just sitting around is killing it?

There are two possible issues, the first is the carburetors are extremely sensitive with very narrow passages for fuel intake, they can be clogged which means you will need to take the carburetor out and have it cleaned or do it yourself. The culprit is the gas, the gas will carry sediment that will clog and/or corrode the carburetor. Most generators do not have an in-line fuel filter. I suggest that you install one not very complicated but it should help protect the carburetor. This advice cost me $189.00 hopefully you will save some money.
