I have used this twice now to till my new garden in preparation for spring planting. It has tilled up my soil just fine with the exception small rocks get wedged from time to time and prevents the blades from turning. I suspect if you are not paying any attention, you could burn up the gears. I just...

Most Helpful Critical Review

This cultivator is only for beds that are already tilled, not even beds that are more than two years old. It does not break any woody roots.

However, It does mix compost or soil additives like a champ and will fluf your beds for the comming season. Great for raised beds.

Surprised

Was not 100% sure the value of this attachment but was tired of tilling by hand.  Lots of power and better then expected results.  Did a good job breaking soil.  Does not compare to a full sized tiller but who wants a uni-tasker.  Good bang for the buck.

Attached to 2-cycle motor.  Plenty of power.

cultivator attchment

I bought this attachment in the Summer of 2007. I took it out of the box and attached it to my 32cc Craftsman String Trimmer. The tines did not turn. I took it back to the store and found out it was defective. The store took it back and gave me a new one. Hooked that one up and have tilled anything and everything. I have tilled a 16' by 30' garden (4 times a year since purchase) with this attachment and never had any problems- as I have read on other reviews. When tilling through weeds or any grassy matter it will clog the tines from turning but all you have to do is remove the matter. You cannot...

Craftsman Cultivator Attachment

I was very skeptical of this product due to the reviews but my desire to have a small cultivator attachment got the better of me. I bought mine in March of 08 and it didn't work right out of the box, I took it back for an exchange and brought it home and tilled up my small 10' 10' garden box it did ok.. I put it away for the season and brought it this year and got about five minute of work out of it before it froze up like the first one. Unfortunately for me the one year warranty point had just expired and I was out of luck. Oh that is unless I paid another $38.00 for a protection agreement. Or... read full review »

I think it works great! Use it RIGHT!

First off, mine works great! I was worried about it not turning and "locking up" like some reviewers have said. When I took it out of the box and BEFORE attaching it I tried to turn the tines by HAND and they wouldn't turn. This worried me until I actually attached it to the motor. I believe since the gearing has to step down the speed that the tines turn so much is why it seems like it is locked up if you try to turn it by hand. I have the 29cc 4-cycle and live in Oklahoma where the soil is hard dry clay. It has no problem cutting into the ground IF YOU GIVE IT SOME MUSCLE. Unlike a regular tiller... read full review »

I have had the attachment for about a year. It works great on my gas trimmer. On very dry dirt it will jump around like crazy. One of the pins that hold’s the blades in place has come off. Went to sears to look for a replacement could not find it. I’m just going to make one myself.

A pretty handy item

I've had the tiller attachment for 6 years and have used it quite a bit. The materials used to make these tillers must have changed since I bought mine, because it is quite rugged. It is not my main garden tiller, so I don't generally use it for tilling big areas. For smaller areas, it works quite well. However, this year, I was forced to use this attachment heavily, since my troy-bilt was in for an overhaul. It took some time to cover the ground I needed tilled, but, it worked very well. I even used it to dig 200 feet of furrows for planting potatoes. It did more work than I think it was designed... read full review »

Poor Product

I had owned an older model of this previously for several years and it worked great, in the same flowerbed. I loaned it out and bought another one when time come to till my flowerbed in 2009. I went through 3 of these in 1 week and still not done. This is light soil with peat moss. It was tilling about 1.5" deep and the latest one lasted approximatley 3 minutes until the wire shaft snapped again running inside the tube. Luckily Sears replaces it and will probably do so again beofre I'm done. Seem cheaply made now. Takes little time before it breaks. Not like the older style. Cheaper shaft materials???... read full review »

5 stars

I bought this tiller because it would hook up to my sons weedwhacker, it turned out really well for tilling my 7 raised garden beds. the only thing I would say after reading some of the other reviews is that you need to let the machine do the work, if your wearing out gears it might mean that you are forcing the machine and overloading it.

NOT A GOOD BUY

Bought this attachment, out of the box it did not work, gear box is no good, it would not turn the tines. Took it back for full refund. The Associates said they had a few returned because of the same problem. Bought a Craftsman small gas tiller, it works perfect, well worth the money! Stay away from the tiller attachment though.

Weak

Don't wast your money on this junk. I regret buying it. I bought it for my father he is in his eighties. Easier to use a shovel and a pick than trying to get this to dig in and move some dirt.

Perfect for small jobs...

I was very skeptical of these convertible units when I first started shopping for a tiller. I used this attachment with the craftsman 4-cycle trimmer, and it is awesome!! Easy to use, easy to store, and most importantly, is just the right size for my small garden and flower beds. It started on the first pull and ran right through my hard clay soil without problem. That being said, be aware that it is heavy and does require some strength and effort to use (no more than I expected). Plenty of power and I'm glad I bought one.

Do Not Buy

I bought a Craftsman Convertible Gas Line Trimmer with the idea of buying the cultivator attachment to add on. I was extremely disappointed with the cultivator. It lasted less than a month of light garden work. The gear box went, therefore the tines would not turn. Fortunately, I saved the receipt and got a refund. Don't buy this thing. It's not worth it. You're better off buying a stand-alone tiller to do the cultivation in your home garden.
