Craftsman LEAFWACKER 3-Way Chipper Shredder 49 States —

305 cm wood chipper and shredder. I bought this item rather than the Troy built from Lowe's because I wanted a unit that would have more power. The 305 cm is lots of power. I have not found a compression release on it and it is all I can do to pull the cord out when starting it. The chipper puts this power to good use, it is rated for 3 inches and I thought that would mean it would do 2 inches without damaging the machine or undue hardship. This thing is a monster. It eats up branches all sizes, and pretty much grabs them out of your hand and pulls them into the machine spitting out clean thin dime sized woodchips, and I mean spits out. Initially I tried running it without the bag on, expecting a pile of chips to lay on the ground below the machine but it shot the chips 30 or 40 feet across my patio and I suspect they went further than that. The airflow through it is used to good advantage on the shredder side where light leaves and grasses and such are sucked into the turning blades and thence go into oblivion. It was easy to set up, or should have been, and would probably take a skilled person 20 minutes but I took closer to an hour and a half and skinned my knuckles because I am an idiot. Put in the gas and oil pull the cord one time and it thunders into life and it has not quit on me yet, although I have only had it for a little under a month is well built and from what it has done so far to a large quantity of limbs all sorts of sizes from the recent storms here in Kentucky it should have no problem continuing on for some time. I own four acres and have a number of old-growth trees which like to drop limbs, and all sorts of cuttings from the property, I expect this shredder to be of great utility to me. If it lets me down I will update this review, if I have not updated this you can consider that the machine has continued to work as well as it does now. I would much sooner buy this than any of those small, lightly built toys that I could find from Troy built.

I agree with RichardInKy. This is an eating machine! It really does take at least a good hour to bolt all the parts on this thing, and what really perturbed me was the inability to access the oil filler after the machine was finally put together. The manual says that the tall oil filler is an accessoriy as are the side oil dip sticks, but I can't find them anywhere. Another migraine came along when one of the outward hopper bolts broke right off into my socket bit. I'm going to try to flatten it out with a hack saw and then drill through it to create something that will help me to rebolt that area. It was too much trouble to call Sears after we had just put the thing together. One broken bolt can be fixed with some imagination I suppose, but the darn thing should have never broken off so easily. GR-R-R! The Briggs & Stratton engine started right up the very first time and took care of a half-acre (so far) of brush in a flash. This thing feeds itself as long as you guide the branches a bit while pushing them into the hopper. As for the shredder, don't put wet leaves in as it will clog the machine. Other than that, this is a very sturdy, well-built machine that we hope to have for a long time to come.
