Craftsman Molding Head Set , 7 in. Diameter Reviews

I have used this molding head for over 25 years, I think. (I don't know exactly when I got it.) When used on a radial arm saw with the appropriate cutters and care in alignment, it will produce easily almost any medium to large scale molding you can design. And it will do it easier than a shaper or router. For simpler jobs (standard shapes for cabinetry, for example) it is at least the equal of most router or shaper setups. That said, though,  it is easier to work around a router table than it is to be reaching around a radial arm saw and cutter head.

The only complaint I have is that the...

Product Not Supported

This product works fine if you have sharp blades. Sears no longer supports this product by selling replacement blades. I would not buy the molding head cutter set knowing that replacement blades are not available!

NO replacement blades available... Why

Why sell an item without the possibility of blade replacement???? I bought mine a few years ago and am pleased with how it works, but now need new blades and Sears does not sell them!! Not only that... it seems nobody else sells them either!!

A Very Useful and Versatile Tool!

Since 1971 I have found that both the single and tripble knife molding head tools to be extremely useful. The Single head tool came with 17 different knives in its own case for easy storgae. The triple came with eight sets in a storage case. I use these heads on both my radial arm and table saws. Each has its advantages depending on what needs to be done. You need to be a little more patient with the single head as it does not cut as smoothly or as quickly as its three-head counterpart. I am really disappointed to learn that Sears no longer offers the variety of knives that it used to. I cannot... read full review »

These do a great job

I use this with both my table and radial arm saws. The raised panel cutters are especially nice but can only be used with a radial arm saw for obvious reasons. This molding cutter does just as good a job as does a router table or shaper. As with using a router table, the same is true with using this molding cutter. That is when cutting, one must make several shallow passes, rather than one or two deep passes. This is the primary cause for tear out in both. The only down side to this product however, is that not all of the cutters are available anymore. Because of this, in the future, I may be forced... read full review »

good product

My dad bought our first set 55 years ago for $10 or so. The cutter head was also available in a 5 inch diameter and it works great on a spindle shaper. At one time, 25 or more different cutters were available. With the full set you could reproduce almost any molding or make 100's of different picture frames. I presently have 16 cutters and need many of the others that have worn out. PLEASE stock the full 25 cutter selection so that I can fill out my set.

Molding head set

I have used this head for 30 years on many projects but is useless now that Sears does not carry the cutters any more. The table saw molding head is easier to use than my router and with less tear out.

Great product for the DYIers

I have owned this table saw molding head and the cutters for several years now and have been very pleased with its performance. I am a finish carpenter and sometimes I have to make up matching trim for older house remodels. This cutter has saved me time and money! I have been able to reproduce older molding profiles that I can't match with router bits or find at the lumber stores. I have also been able to grind my own profiles onto the 1" dado cutter to cover a wider range of profiles than Sears had once offered for this molding head. I, like the others offering reviews, hope that Sears takes the... read full review »

Table Saw Molding Heads

Works quite well on my big Craftsman table saw. Go slow at the end of the cuts to reduce tear-out. For decent results use as straight grained lumber as you can find.

Sears, I believe, must be clearing out their molding head cutter sets!  At the current price of $25 they are a great buy for the woodworker who knows how to use them!  That is a key element in this, knowing how to use them because, like any other power tool accessory, these things can take a nasty bite out of you if you don't watch what you're doing!

I bought this set for a very specific job (kitchen cabinets for the wife) and the cutter I needed was right there in the pack!  Score!

I got this set home and immediately opened up the instructions and read through them thoroughly.  A set...

Small shaper does big jobs

I purchased this molding head cutter set last year when I built some built in shelves for my living room. I used it to make decorative moldings for the face frames. Since then, I used it once to build a cabinet door. The set came with easy to follow instructions, and installed on my table saw as easily as changing blades. Installing the cutter knives in the head unit is pretty much idiot proof, but they are a rather tight fit, and I recommend that you store the cutter without any knives in it, as they tend to stick if they've been installed for a while. The unit did everything it was supposed to,... read full review »

Craftsman Moulding Head Cutter,7in Diameter

From looking at your catalogue, I am very fortunate that I purchased my moulding head cutter abuot 6 years ago. I've used mine for making mostly cabinets and shelving units. The greatest thing about it is that it is so easy to use. I find it takes no more passes than a router, and if your last pass just skims the last cut you never have to take sandpaper to it. Again, as the last review stated the only draw back to this increadable moulding head cutting machine is, the lack of cutting heads. After awhile you get tired of the same patterns. I've combined head patterns, but it is next to impossible... read full review »
