Craftsman Hi-Vac mower was ready when promissed, the operation is quiet. I used it once and so far am very impressed, Quiet, great pick-up and easy to control What I do not like is the height adjustment for the front and back wheels (no indication that they are on the same height) and the starter apears to be a bit slugish (although starting the new mower) and there is a bit of oil burning off (not sure if thats the shipping oil). I had to go back to Sears because the oil which should of been in the box was not there. Overall after one use I am happy.
...

Plenty of power. When used with a high lift blade or a dethatching blade this thing will not only cut but also vacuum your lawn. The key start is great, and the deck washdown system is pure genius. Comes with a "low pitch" muffler that really actually sounds quieter and just plain old more powerful then the standard mower. The only cons are small ones. The bagging system can be messy if you dont make sure the bottom of it is snapped in place. Just make sure it is... Before it was broken in, it had a problem getting into freewheel when pulling the mower backwards. Seems to have cured itself. Really looking forward to using the dethatching blade to mulch up the leaves in the fall. Good solid machine. READ THE DIRECTIONS!
...

I bought one of these from sears in 2009. This mower worked great for about 3 months, then the drive gears which are molded into the inside of the plastic rear wheels stripped. Replacements cost $30 per set. These I have had to replace annually.

The catch bag is poorly designed. The metal rod that serves as the hinge pin for the bag emptying hatch constantly comes apart, so home made rigs are required to keep it together. The snap closing system of that same hatch never worked properly, I had to put a spring loaded alligator clamp on it to keep it closed during use.

The cosmetic plastic front deck cover on the front of the mower broke very early in the mower's life. I threw it away during the first summer once I determined the part was only cosmetic and not worth the time to fix.

The engine has always started easily but it is Briggs and Stratton in name only. It is a Chinese made engine, so I have low expectations for its longevity. It is starting to burn oil when it is first...
...

In April 2009 I purchased a Sears Craftsman Walk Behind Lawn Mower. It is a 21" 775 Series Self Propelled, Automatic Start, Rear Bag Mulching Mower with 175 CC and 7.5 ft/lbs Torque Briggs and Stratton Engine. Model # 917.371031, one of the best available at the time, or so I was told. I paid $426.99.

We mow our lawn with A Sears Craftsman Riding Lawn Mower and I use the Walk Behind to cut the few areas that the Rider will not fit into and I did not use it every week, the point is it saw very little use and gentle use at that.

To be honest and fair, first I must say that I really like it a lot, when I can use it. The starter is easy and trouble free and starts the first time every time. The drive is more than adequate and it cuts and mulches great. The engine runs great and is much quieter than my old mower and with more power. It bags well for the few times that I tried that. Overall it is a great mower, with one serious design flaw.

This the by far best lawn mower that I've ever had in the thirty-five years I've been cutting my grass. Three years ago I decide to spend the extra $100.00 to get a better mower. It starts every time. I am perfectly satisfied with the bagging system although it did take a little time to get adjusted to it. The deck height adjustment is a really nice feature and it still works great after three years. It has the extra power that I need to shred piles of leave for mulch in the fall. I am extremely hard on mowers they usually only last 3 to 5 years. This one is still running like new. I think it is a great design and I happy I spent the extra cash.
...

New mower went 10 feet down the yard and a rear drive wheel fell off the mower. Outer wheel bearing was completely missing so wheel was not held captive in place. When the wheel fell off it was destroyed by the drive gear. Sears parts where not open on Sunday so chance to fix right away. On the positive side I found the parts numbers myself online very quickly and easily and a very decent diagram which made it clear I was missing the outer wheel bearing as I suspected. I feel the QA must be pretty poor to allow a mower out the door missing a critical bearing! Monday called around and no stores had this model on the floor for a fast exchange. Sears parts did not stock wheel and said it could be up to two weeks to get it sent out and back for repairs. To expidite I had them order new wheel and the missing bearing and ship to my house at no cost to me and plan to install myself (1 week delivery at most). Overall the mower appears well built (barring the missing bearing issue) and started...
...

This mower lacks the power to cut mow thru weeklong grass. If the grass is wet with morning dew expect the engine to stall. The "mulching" system doesn't mulch the grass, it just drops it on the lawn in clumps. My mower is only one season old but I have never noticed the vac feature to work any better than my old mower. I wish I had purchased a more powerful mower with an actual mulching blade/system. The collection bag DOES catch a lot of grass but is awkward to attach, remove, and dump. My advice? Go with a more powerful and better mulcher mower if you have a big yard. Try a tractor mower.
...

This lawn mower is easy and convenient to use. It always starts when we turn the key, which saves your shoulder and back from pulling. The mulching bag is nice, but small as I have a large 1.3 acre yard and chose not to buy a rising mower for the exercise. But with a yard over 100 yards long, it quickly fills the bag. My only complaint is that I had to take it back to service because two of the mounting bolts came out. This was repaired in about 10 - 14 days.
...

I was a little wary about buying this mower at first since I wasn't able to view it in person first. I bought this mower strictly off what I read online and all the reviews that it had. I have roughly 4 acres of land and 2 acres of it being grass. I bought this to mow the front and sides of my lawn , as I have a commercial mower for the backyard. I couldn't believe how easy it started right up when I turned the key. I went on vacation for 2 weeks and came back to about 10-12in high grass. I could not believe the power this mower had, it cut right through the tall, thick grass without slowing down or even sputtering. I would highly recommend this to anybody with a medium size lawn.
...

Before purchasing this mower on-line (not available in stores), I was a bit concerned about the bag issue that some reviewers mentioned on here. I am happy to report that the bag installs easily and I do not have an issue with grass clippings blowing by. I was very impressed that as soon as I took the mower out of the box and put some gas in it, just turned the electric started on and it fired right up. Literally first turn of the motor with no choke or priming straight out of the box. The motor runs very smoothly and it's quiet. The main source of noise is the spinning blade, but the engine itself is impressively quiet. The manual says that the mower is shipped without oil, but a bottle is included. There was no bottle in mine and the motor already had oil in it, though it wasn't enough, I had to add a few ounces to get it to the full mark on the dipstick. The easy-walk feature is great, especially that you can apply it on either the left or right side of the handle bar. Rear-wheel-drive...
...

This is a great mower cranks on first pull or turn of the key with no priming. Since I didn't have the room to store a rider or zero turn around like I wanted I was lucky enough to run across this mower new in the box at a closeout center for $250 what a steal. This mower is very powerful the blade cuts and leaves very little clumping even when grass is slightly wet and the suction on it is amazing. When I got the mower I at first thought the bag wasn't fitting properly but then I figured out how it attaches to the mower. Once you understand how it goes on it is easy on and easy off and there is no gap for dust to escape. It is well worth $499 and a great deal at $399 as it is currently priced. My previous mower was a Craftsman 6.25 rear bagger and it is a good mower but wasn't self propelled. This mower has made my life easier and no longer dread cutting the lawn; plus it has where you can attach the garden hose to clean the under carriage (Sweet)

I run a lawn service company, I purchased 1 of the hi vacs from sears just to see how it would perform cause it was much cheaper than the usual Hondas & Toros that i currently use. I put it into service the next day and the guys on my crew wanted to use the hi vac alot more than the Toros, I kept on getting positive remarks from my employees. That within 2 weeks of the lawnmower mowing over 100 lawns and still going strong I went down to my local sears store and bought 1 more. This lawnmower in my opinion is great at mulching and especially bagging it is awsome. Please if you buy this mower make sure you understand how to use it and it will perform up to its expectations, read the owners manual.. I will highly recomend this lawn mower......sears also has a great repair center....

I have read all of the other reviews with great interest and having just bought this mower at Sears for a closeout price of $349 I am incredibly impressed. I have a very hilly rough property with a lot of seriously overgrown grass/weeds/brambles etc. It started on the key without a charge and proceeded to kick *** all over the yard at any speed or cut height. Its very easy to operate with either hand and the speed control seems great. Just for a laugh I decided (rashly) to go straight through a 2-3 ft overgrown area which I did not even attempt with a weed wacker. It went straight through without a hiccup.. This lawn mower is one very powerful dude. I cannot comment on the grass catcher side of things as I only mulch but looking at it (as an engineer) I imagine a lot of posters problems are 'finger trouble' and not assembling correctly.

The whole machine seems well designed and plenty strong enough for a homeowner. The only negative I have is the unpainted underside which seems crazy. I...
...

This mower has an excellent "feel", and as a result improves the overall mowing experience. Compared to my older Craftsman (similar engine front drive rear bagger - I've had many Craftsman self-propelled mowers), this one feels like a Lexus (as compared to, say, a basic pickup truck). I believe this is due to a combination of factors - the soft grip angled handle, softer & larger rubbery tires, rear drive (my front yard is slightly sloped and I had to push the front drive along somewhat), smooth engine, balanced weight distribution, rear drive, and improved silencer / better sound. The ball bearing wheels add to the rigidity of the overall deck assembly. This deck is actually a heavy gage half-donut, with pieces welded on for wheel mounting, vs. a larger rectangularized stamping, that likely gives better cutting performance. The dual-lever, variable speed drive control is handy, as is key-start, although the drive is 'almost' a tad slow, but is not really an issue. ...
...

I had a front wheel drive and some small hills in my yard, got a workout each time I mowed. Bought this one and now mowing is a breeze. Electric start is great, rear wheel climbs right up the hills, very smooth, easy to maneuver. Great buy! The single lever for adjusting front and rear height is a must too. Contoured handle, and two levers for self propel is very nice too! I researched this and the Toro per Consumer Reports, coworker bought the Toro, but I think I got the better deal. Would have been nice if got a Craftsmen Club discount, but $100 off price is a deal!
...

My old craftsman bit the dust one day so I baught a lawn boy ( had problems ) then baught a honda ( had problems ) the for the third time round I went to sears to buy a craftsman ( should have done that first ) I baught last years model the 875 limited edidtion pictured under 775 series. Its a powerfull mower, baggings not much of a problem just opens at the bottom when full so you know when to empty it. ( lots of times ) I had a problem with pulling the mower backwards after releasing the rear propelled lever. The mower would not release the rear wheels to allow me to pull it backwards. I liked the mower so much that I pulled it apart and made my adjustments. I also wanted to check the rear wheels gears. They were dry with no grease. ( thats metal gear on plastic wheel gears ) with no grease they will wear out fast. I personally think just because you buy new does not mean you still do not have to service it. Well you should right away and then you will have a mower...
...
