Good deal for my first Jointer

Craftsman Professional 1-1/2 hp 6-1/8&#34Jointer/Planer (21705) —

I bought this jointer at the same time I purchased a table saw and a band saw under the Sears Craftsman Club. By the time I got all the discounts, it was a little over $300. For the money, it was an outstanding deal. Complaint with a caveat: When I purchased it, Sears was out of stock. They ordered it and were supposed to call me in 5 days when it came in. By day 8, still no work from Sears so I went down there and found it had been in for 4 days. Got it delivered to the house, unpackaged the box (which was in very bad shape), and found that the cast iron feeder table was broken badly. I called my local Sears store and they gave me 2 options: 1) I could bring back all the pieces and they would give me another unit, or 2) they would order me a new feeder table. Apart form it being a pain to take back, I did so and immediately got a new machine. This one was not broken and all was well. I have to give Sears an At-a-boy for their fine and prompt customer service and would recommend better packing in the future. The unit is just to heavy for Styrofoam in a box.. Pros: Fit and finish are good. The jointer went together easily, but the instructions not nearly as good as those with the band saw or the table saw. You have to read between the lines a bit. Only minor adjustments were required when completed. The bed was spot on. You will need 2 people to help lift the bed onto the stand. I did it by myself, impatient and there was no one else around, but it was a real pain and would not recommend it. The jointer itself is fairly quite when running. Of course, when you plan a 6 board, it gets loud and you should use hearing protection. Not sure this is a pro or con, but you have to at least use a shop vac for cuttings collection. If you don't, it will stop-up and start throwing the cuttings out the top of the machine. When hooked up to my shop vac, I have no issues. I purchased a mobile base at the same time I got the machine and that was a real plus. The safety equipment on the jointer is first rate. Motor has been powerful enough for me on all jobs done, even when taken to the maximum width. I have not problems getting my boards jointed to fit together. However, I usually use the jointer to get a flat edge and then use to table saw to get a square board. Use the table sawn edges to get an exact fit. Cons: Not many The blades had a small nick on them when the unit arrived. Of course within a few weeks, they had several more. I downgraded the durability a star because I would like to see a better blade from Sears if possible. Better backing would eliminate any breakage during shipping. Conclusions: I would definitely buy again. No way you can get this value for the money with any other brand.
