I chose this planer based on its features, cost, and "editors choice" in American Woodworker magazine. It was chosen with the Dewalt 735. But the standard features of the Craftsman were expensive options for the Dewalt. Replacement blades are also $20 cheaper for the Craftsman, so Craftsman it was.

When it arrived, I could tell that it had been returned once, so I was skeptical. However, since I live 4 hours from a store, and as former Sears (20+ years ago), I know that items sometimes are returned for rediculous reasons. I carefully unpacked the planer and discovered the missing screw in the outfeed table. With a standard thread, I was able to locate an aproppriate machine screw in my shop. All better, and I didn't have to wait!
The setup instructions were adequate, and all other parts were present, and easily assembled. It fit easily on my generic tool stand.

The output quality is as good as advertised. With a little tweaking of the outfeed table I was able to eliminate snipe on a 16" board. The smoothness of the planed wood, even at the standard feed setting, was quite good and really didn't need sanding.
The overall size of the planer is bigger than I anticipated. I've got to shoehorn it into my shop somewhere.
I've only had the tool a short time so I can't speak to reliability or durability.
