Craftsman Professional 21" Walk Behind Caster Mower —

Craftsman Professional 21" Walk Behind Caster Mower is a professional mower without the price.  (88776)  Twenty-one inch deck, with caster wheels on the front for easy manueverability.  Some assembly is required but it is very easy.  Very powerful Briggs and Stratton Engine (8.75 Torque), 6 speeds, mulch, bag, electric start, just about everything you need to take care of your lawn with the greatest of ease.  The down fall to this mower is that the wingnuts for the front wheels are made out of plastic, so you may want to replace them with metal ones or just be careful.  This will not impact the ability to cut.  This is a very impressive mower.

Sounds like you got a couple of lemons, I have 2, use them commercially and never really had a problem. I do not work for Sears sorry, I own a landscaping company. Good Luck.

how long have you had it. I purchased one last year in April 2009 and there are several issues with this mower. 1. the rear wheel covers keep falling off. If you don't pay attention, you will suck one up into your rear bag which i've done. I took the damaged cover to my local sears store and they gave me a new one. 2. It seems the battery holds enough charge for one key start. pull start there after even after Sears replaced the batterry. 3. the pull start used to be easy 1 to 2 pulls but soon after that, it takes sometimes 10 pulls or more where I strained my shoulder muscles. I took it in for service and took it home after 2 weeks. for this years new mowing season beginning (last week) the mower started (key) only in the beginning and pull there after. I now use a velcroe strap to keep the motor running. I was on my last bag and the front wheel fell off which i only noticed after the mower ran over it. the plastic bell housing under the mower towards the rear is plastic so when you're backing up and it gets caught on some grass it flexes and the blade hits it to shreads. I took the mower back for service yesterday 4/19/10. This is my 3 Craftsman professional in less than a year. The first leaked lots of oil., the second just refused to start. I had though that the 3rd one would be a charm but this design has very serious flaw. Not deserving of the Professional name.

Your's truly,
A very disappointed long time sears customer.

P.S. Sears, please look into your quality control standards and maybe consider upping your standards a bit. I'll pay a bit more for a product for quality.

I read about the full charge part, and read the thread about using boards and such underneath it. Looks like I will charge it and bring it inside. Thank you.

Page 22 of the Manual hints at cold storage:
Battery
The battery must be stored with a full charge. Extended storage of a
discharged battery will reduce life and capacity of the battery.

Wet cell is a lead acid battery, like the car, tractor and mower. Weakened ones freeze to death, unlike drycells which actually store better when frozen.

I will do that, the manual never stated anything about this. Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is a wet cell battery? Thanks for the good advice.

You may want to bring the battery inside this winter, its a wet cell.
