Who makes it?  Sears salespeople don't have a clue who produces their 357cc engine...can't seem to understand why anyone would want to know the brand of engine on the product they're about to purchase.  I really like this feature heavy machine and would have bought one yesterday, but nobody could tell me anything about the engine other than it's new.

Common question on this site. LCT makes it for MTD, who makes it for SHC. :)

Seriously, though, LCT is a Chinese company that MTD is using to fill the void left by the now-defunct Tecumseh. Their engines mimic the Briggs & Stratton design for horizontal crankshaft engines, and have a slightly more durable set of features (like the gas tank and spark plug harness).

Any Craftsman-brand snowthrower engine is made by LCT.

While I can't specifically dispute the clain that all Craftsman engines are made by LCT, the LCT web site is totally silent on the existence of a 357cc engine.  A Google search reveals that the only 357cc engine is made by Yamaha.  Oddly, I already owned a 5,500 watt generator with a 357cc Yamaha engine.  When I compared the Craftsman 357cc engine with the 357cc Yamaha engine, they appear to be the same.  Another more recent rock in an already choppy pool.
