Great saw so far. I have only cut a couple 12" diameter trees down and diced them up into 18" logs. And used it on a deck construction job slicing through 6x6 beams like they were butter. I am very impressed. Too bad it doesn't start on the first pull like my Honda mower. But 4 easy pulls isn't too bad....

not impressed

I have had a 16 craftsman for years so when it came time to upgrade I went right back to Sears. Bought two days ago and have cut approx 15 trees with this saw. If you like wearing gloves while you cut do not buy this saw, because I cannot start it with gloves on. However, if you like a saw that is very...

Craftsman Professional 40cc 18 in. Gas Chain... Reviews

Displaying reviews 1 - 13 of 18 in total

The saw was powerful enough to work through two stacks of wood 14ft x 18in in a matter of a several hours (took a few breaks!).  The saw was easy to start, altho you may have problems with the choke if you have thick fingers.  The Japanese guy that assembled the saw must have had more than his share of Wheaties that day because the chain adjustment nuts were on so tight I could not budge them, even with a pry bar on the accompanying tool (the tool broke where the screwdriver connects to the nut wrenches).  Finally had to use a socket wrench and pry bar.  After that, the chain adjusted easily...

Nice Chainsaw

This chainsaw feels pretty sturdy. I have used it a few times, and I have not had any issues yet. I did notice it is made in Japan, so I'll take that as a good thing.

good purchase

I've owned and used a good number of saws, including more expensive ones.  I have nothing bad to say about this saw...  It cuts good, has very low vibration, starts easy, was a bargain($200 sale price) and hopefully will last forever with its chrome lined cylinder. I don't know about being a "professional" saw but definitely upper end for home user, occasional user.  Made cutting down and cleaning up my willow tree with a 3 foot diameter very very easy.

OUTSTANDING SAW

Recently researched for a replacement for my older 18" craftsman chain saw. After visiting the web, decided to visit my local Sears. After checking out all the models currently available, i decided to see what the sales rep had to say about this saw. I was pretty sure this was the one before asking. I was more interested to see if this saw was returned frequently for repairs or defects. I know the sears reps and they will let me know which tools are working and which are returned frquently. Once home, i found this saw to out perform itself. Cutting 20" mesquite trees has been a breeze. The only...

This saw works hard.

After two days of working this saw hard I'm happy that I purchased it. It's pretty light for its power which makes a big difference when you're up a ladder. My old saw was hard to start especially when warm. But not this one, only once in two days did it not fire up first pull. A huge difference when you are up in a tree. The oil tank is fairly small so you need to be careful not to run it dry and blunt a chain like I did. But I don't really mind that because less fluid equals less weight. Well worth the money so far. Hope it lasts!

Finally a light, but powerful saw that starts right up every time and doesn't stall, but will idle as long as there's gas in the tank! Now that I'm a bit older (55yrs) I truely appreciate the light weight of the saw and it's compact size for cutting in tight quarters. It's a pleasure to pick up the saw and know it's going to start with-in 5 pulls and that it won't keep stalling out on you. I also own a larger Stiel saw (much heavier) which I now reserve for those few bigger cuts, but as soon as I can, I change over to this one. Another great feature is it's very low vibration; I've run this thing...

Nice saw

I've become pretty skeptical of Craftsman products in recent years but picked up the Craftsman Professional 18" saw to replace an early 80's Craftsman due to a great sale price. I've had it for about a year now and have no complaints whatsoever. It's got plenty of power, is lightweight and relatively quiet. It always starts with a couple pulls. It's got a plastic housing but has turned out to be fine and has taken some pretty good hits falling off stumps and tailgates with no damage. Easy to use controls and even a decent case. If you're going to get a Craftsman saw for light to medium-duty... read full review »

They last a lifetime.

My husband and brothers always use Craftsman Tools.

Purchased this with advice from another review. This machine is in fact a Zenoah/Komatsu chain saw. The first unit purchased worked fine, although the main handle was shattered upon taking it out of the box.  I returned it for a second unit, brought it home and started it.  The second saw had a problem with the chain brake and after the initial 5 minutes of running, the side with the chain brake started smoking/melting the plastic housing.  I took the unit back and they advised they had no more in stock.  I asked to take the handle of the second one and transfer it to the first.  They did...

Excellent chainsaw

Purchased this chainsaw in April to finish cleaning up after December's ice storm when my father-in-law needed his Husqvarna back. After comparing many models I settled on the Craftsman pro for its light-weight, quick chain tensioning system and low price (I purchased it on sale). In felling and bucking about a dozen trees with diameters up to 30" I have not been disappointed. The saw starts easily every time, runs great and slices through everything like a hot knife through butter. Only recommendation is using a good bar/chain oil. The first generic brand I bought was used up prior to the tank... read full review »

recommend for small jobs

Puchase 3/2009 on line.  Used once.  First chain saw I've owned.  Blade dulled very quickly.  Friend noticed that the chain oil resevoir was empty.  Must keep that full or it gets to hot and dulls blade much to fast.  Then it would not start because the primer bulb was leaking air.  I returned it at store.  Because it was less than 90 days they gave me a brand new one.  Much to my surprise the neww one did NOT have a prime bulb.  It starts fine without it and it cuts fine on branches 14" or less in diameter.

What a Great Saw

I purchased this chain saw through my local Sears outlet store. The Salesman was very professional and was able to get me this saw quickly. I picked up the saw and brought it home. It went to work the next day cutting down a tree at a Church. The tree was 36 inches around. I fired up the saw and it started on the 1st pull. The saw ran great and had plenty of power. It sliced through the wood like butter, I was pleasantly surprised with how little vibration there was with this saw. This was easy on my hands and arms. The power band was smooth from idle to full throttle. The saw is light weight... read full review »

Made in Japan

Excellent saw, lightweight and compact. A little research reveals the saw made in Japan by Zenoah, a Japanese company bought by Husqvarna a couple of years ago. It looks exactly like the Zenoah GZ4000, the placement of the two reservoir caps and every other feature looks identical. It is a low emeission engine which barely smokes while in use. Very different to the old saw I had which could be counted on to produce clouds of smoke when in use. The bar and chain are by Oregon and the chain tensioner mechanism is all metal. While I haven't figured out which screw the diagram refers to, the oiler... read full review »
