6 x 48 Edge Sander... The first review

Craftsman Professional 6 x 48 in. Edge Belt Sander —

Before I get started, allow me to mention that my sander really only has an hour or so of combined sanding time on it. My review and rating are based on that amount of time, so your mileage may vary as they say. First, I really wanted the big boy luthier version from another source of import machines, but I don't have the room or the ability to get several hundred pounds of cast iron down into the basement easily. I read reviews of the import edge sanders and they weren't all glowing, so I figured I would take a shot on this machine. I ordered it online and it was delivered within the time frame that was listed. It arrived pretty much completely assembled on a pallet with just the tables needing assembly if I recall correctly. I was surprised to see a cheesy, low-budget, import abrasive belt on it, especially when Sears sells a nice abrasive belt the same size for their regular belt sander. This one had a bump on the seam that hits your work every time it goes around. This was not a good start for me. I happened to be near a Sears soon afterward and bought an 80 grit belt. I thought it would just slip right on and away I'd go but.... I had to adjust the tracking on the new belt. The tracking mechanism seemed a bit awkward considering how belt tracking has evolved over the years. In use, as a right handed person, I feel a bit strange on the work side of the machine which is on the left side of the front of the sander. This is opposite of what I see in pictures of the bigger machines. I would have liked larger tables, but I figure I can make auxilliary tables. All in all, the sander has worked great so far. It runs and occillates like it should and seems pretty solid. Nothing has loosened up yet and I haven't had to make any other adjustments. I haven't had a need to tilt the table or use the miter guage so I can't comment on those features. I also haven't used it with a dust collector yet. Personally I would have designed a collector port that surrounds more of the belt. We'll see what happens with the dust when I get it down the stairs and out of the garage. Obviously you get less work space on the platen with the smaller machine so consider that when you figure this machine is only 200 dollars less than the industrial strength one. A plus is that it doesn't require an addition to your house. Anyway, I hope this was helpful for you in your decision to consider this machine. I have no connection to Sears and I have not received anything from them for this review. ( although a couple new belts of varying grits would be nice....)
